1. Statement Necklace
You need to have one necklace that makes you stand out. You may look plain if you wear a white shirt and denim skinny jeans but as soon as you put on this necklace it’s a totally different outfit. Whether the necklace is leather, chunky, beaded, chandelier, it needs to suit your personality and make a statement.
2. Day-to-Night Outfit
Buy a brand new jumper or pant suit that you can wear to work during the day but also go out in at night. It saves when you’re on a budget and makes two outfits out of one. Try a black silk jumper, one you can dress up with a belt day or night. Black is never out of style and can be worn many ways.
3. The Maxi Skirt
You’ve seen lots of these long skirts all summer and you bet they’re overlapping into fall, too. Women think even if they wear a long skirt in the fall or winter they will still be cold, but this is not true! The long maxi skirt actually shields off the wind from your legs so they never get cold. But if you prefer, wear a thin pair of leggings underneath your skirt. This way, in case snow is on it’s way, you’ll be ready. Obviously, you should go with a black long maxi and black or nude leggings. The maxi looks great with flats, wedges, and even boots for those rainy fall days.
4. Leopard Print
Even if you’re skeptical about wearing leopard print, your closet should contain one leopard print piece. Don’t be afraid to wear it, but makes sure it doesn’t wear you. But if you are afraid to experiment with such a strong print or don’t know how to wear it, opt for trying a fun leopard print shoe. It’s not too much of a detail to wear plus — if everyone is focused on your shoes it will elongate your legs. Shoes can be very versatile, so start wearing leopard print on something small and work your way up. Wear leopard print shoes with skinny jeans or black leggings and a solid top. You don’t want to overpower the leopard print, you want to make those roar.
5. New Evening Attire
Have one cocktail dress or maxi dress on hand always. You never know when you might get invited to a wedding or have a date. Always have a well-fitted dress in your closet. You never want to go last minute shopping for evening attire — it will end up in a disaster if you don’t have money to splurge. You also never want to tailor anything too late. Always make sure your evening attire is current and currently fitting to you.
6. Christmas Sweater
You’re thinking, “Bill Cosby’s sweater will never be in style.” While some may think that way, others can pull it off. Opt for a fisherman or cable knit sweater with a fun print you could never see yourself in and wear it with fun high-waisted pants or flare jeans. It will give off a seventies feel but you’ll feel so comfortable throughout the day.
7. Chic Coat
Living in New York, you should always have a good winter coat. Camel colored coats are always a great color for fall and winter, plus they basically go with any outfit. If you often think, “What coat am I going to wear with this outfit?” invest in a great camel colored coat. Try a great men’s looking tailored coat. Acne makes a great wool one button long coat but H&M makes a replica for cheap.
8. Pant Suit
Not many designers today are making a smart sexy pantsuit. Hint hint! Designers please help the ladies out! You should always invest in a great tailored suit, just one for the office will do or if you have any fundraiser or event to go to. Staple colors are always gray and black, but play it up and go for a red or blue. You probably feel if you buy a bright color you can’t wear the suit as much, but this isn’t true. You can always recycle outfits! Wear a different undershirt, add accessories, or change the shoes and the purse and it becomes a whole new outfit. It’s the little things that really make an outfit anyways. Express makes a fantastic red pant suit. You can choose if you want a flare pant or editor’s pant and pair it with a long, or cropped jacket.
9. The Wedge Heel
These platform-looking seventies vibe heels are back! They’re easier to walk in and comfortable to wear for long periods of time, not to mention they go with anything! Try a sexy open toe high wedge. Go for a classic in brown or black, but if you have money to splurge go for an Alexander McQueen wedge sandal embellished with jewel straps.
10. Smart Clutch
It’s never in style to go to an event or bar with a huge satchel or bowling bag of a purse. Always have a smart clutch you can go back to every season. Have a bright colored clutch even if it doesn’t match anything in your closet — don’t go to the extreme and only buy basic color clutches to match your outfits and shoes. Live a little and brighten up your wardrobe with simple steps.
