Although the scorching Arizona weather did not fully cooperate, the Phoenix Animal Care Coalition (“PACC911”) and Franciscan Renewal Center’s 18th Annual St. Francis Festival Blessing of the Animals Adopt-a-thon on October 22 and 23, 2011, at the Franciscan Renewal Center (the “Casa”) in Scottsdale still proved to be a howling success. Despite the 90-plus degree weather, approximately 268 animals were adopted out by PACC911 rescue partners over the two-day event.
Over 70 rescues participated throughout the festival, bringing dogs of every size, shape, breed and disposition to the mix. Dog breed rescues included Arizona Beagle Rescue and Arizona Great Pyrenees Association and Rescue, and other species were represented by rescues such as Arizona Maine Coon Cat Rescue, Hope for Cats, Brambley Hedge Rabbit Rescue, and Any Rat Rescue.
In addition to the rescues, there were many vendors selling everything from innovative dog leashes to pet ID tags, a face-painting booth, a dog wash, and the Franciscans blessed animals brought in by the public every day at noon and 2 p.m. Arizona Animal Welfare League (“AAWL”) provided on the spot microchipping and low cost vaccinations, and a grill and ice cream stand provided budget-friendly refreshments. There was something for everyone, and everyone seemed to be enjoying something, whether it was picking out a new pet, finding a unique accessory, or having their animals blessed.
PACC911 board members Bari Mears and Eileen Proctor could often be heard over the Casa’s public address system, cheerfully encouraging visitors to find their next four-legged family member, and profiling special adoptable pets, such as Sunshine, a longtime shelter resident at AAWL, who is still available for adoption.
Even through the shimmering heat, visitors and participants enjoyed a fun-filled weekend celebrating those animals that make our lives whole. PACC911 has several more adoptathons slated for the 2011-2012 year; if you missed this great event, please check out their website to get the scoop on their next one. You won’t want to miss it!
