“I call heaven and earth to witness before you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Choose therefore life, that both thou and thou seed may live…”(Deuteronomy 30:19)
Malcolm Brennan, Director of the Charleston 40 Days For Life Campaign, in his own words at the September 11, 2011 Cast the Vision event:
“Since we recently memorialized the 10thanniversary of the horrendous attacks that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001 I thought I would share a Pro-Life perspective on these terrible attacks. The murder of our brothers and sisters on Sept. 11, 2001 was a great injustice that reminds us how suddenly and dramatically our lives can be changed. When we remember the victims of those attacks that have passed into eternity, we should remember also that one day we will follow them.
Like them, we do not know the day, the hour, or the way that our time will come. Like them, we too will one day be called to stand before Almighty God and give an account of our lives. Our material possessions will be stripped away and we will be judged with divine justice and divine mercy. Some say that justice and mercy are contradictions but the Pro-Life movement shows how they can be united in Christ.
We demand justice for the unborn child, and offer mercy and forgiveness to those who have committed or assisted in abortions. Since none of us is sinless, we dare not cast stones at our opponents. We must also acknowledge that our prior silence has allowed this injustice to proceed on a massive scale. Let us all promise from this day forward to to be Silent No More!
The attacks of September 11th are a horrific example of mass murder, but In God’s eyes, it does not matter if the instrument of the premeditated killing is a knife, a gun, an airliner, or the forceps of an abortionist. On average every day over 3,400 abortions are performed in the US. Every day is a disaster of Sept. 11thproportions in the womb of American women.
One of the most difficult yet essential Christian teachings is that we must forgive those who have transgressed against us if we hope to be forgiven for our transgressions against God. If we seek revenge we fall into a cycle of retribution that will consume us. This is the way and the fate of the terrorist. 40 DFL is the kind of healing response that Christ requires of His people. We do not hurl accusations or display horrific images. We do not primarily seek a political solution to abortion; we seek God’s forgiveness and healing.
Forgiving does not mean condoning. Our duty is to call them to repentance so that they and we may receive God’s mercy. 40 DFL takes God at His word. In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God said: “And my people, upon whom my name is called, being converted, shall make supplication to me, and seek out my face, and do penance for their most wicked ways: then will I hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sins and heal their land.”
If ever the world needed God’s healing it is now. Recent examples are too numerous to mention. Wars, famine, natural disasters, economic chaos, violence, corruption, rampant immorality, attacks on the family, and a “culture of death” that is spreading.
The niece of Martin Luther King, Alveda King, has said the Pro-Life movement is the most important Civil Rights cause of our day. Mother Theresa of Calcutta, who worked with the destitute India knew poverty better than we, but she said that it is a poverty to say that a child must die so that I may live as I please.
During these campaigns over 4,000 women have told 40 DFL vigil participants that they have changed their hearts and decided to keep their babies. Lives are being saved! Souls are being saved! Don’t forget the 10 saves in our own community during the Spring campaign earlier this year. Once again we must come to the aid of these children who will be scheduled to die during this campaign. Let us not fail them.
The time to pray about this is now! Woe to us if we do not act while we can still receive God’s mercy. When the disciples asked Jesus why they were not able to expel a certain demon, Christ said: This kind can only be expelled by fasting and prayer.
When you pray for those killed in the attacks of Sept. 11thconsider that the inspired words of the Bible speak to all generations. God’s warning to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land over 4,000 years ago speak just as clearly to us, ‘I call heaven and earth to witness before you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Choose therefore life, that both thou and thou seed may live.’”
Please join us and guest speaker Fr. Scott Daniels from Priests for Life at the Kick-Off Rallyvigil this Wednesday September 28, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in front of the Charleston Women’s Medical Center 1312 Ashley River Rd. Charleston, SC.
Let us pray: Father, thank you for the gift of life. Your word says “all have sinned and fall short of (your) glory.” Thank you for your grace and mercy in sending your only Son in our place on Calvary’s cross. Thank you for rescuing us from the punishment we all deserve for allowing 54 million babies to be killed through nothing less than our own selfish desires. Help us Lord as we pray and fast. Change our hearts toward the unborn and those who participate in their murder. Send healing and an end to the murder through the confession and repentance of those of us who are called by Your name. In Jesus name we pray.
