Based upon statements issued by high level officials with United States government, reliable sources have indicated a real threat of a terrorist attack this Sunday, the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attack. Washington, DC and New York City are on high alert, with all governmental agencies working together to make sure that any such attack is to be avoided.
However, cities like Memphis, Tennessee should not take these threats lightly. Any terrorist will realize that there is saturated security assigned to the major cites like New York City and Washington, DC, and therefore the less profile cities like Memphis, Tennessee could be a logical target. Major damage to either of the two east/west bridges headed west out of Memphis over the Mississippi river would cause major havoc to east/west highway travel and result in a major collapse of interstate commerce. Hopefully, all government agencies involved are on top of the situation and such landmarks are of top priority.
It is hard to cover every possible target, especially when fanatical terrorist are willing to sacrifice their lives to damage America and its people in any manner conceivable. So hopefully those targets where the most damage could be inflicted on the US are the focus of extreme security and surveillance, regardless of the less significance of the local. And there are many targets that can be considered strategic landmarks outside the obvious boundaries of New York City and Washington, DC. With that said, every American in all locals should keep their eyes and ears open, and be prepared to report anything out of the ordinary.
It’s hard to believe that the tragic event happened ten years ago. I’m sure most know where they were when they first saw the crumbling “Twin Towers”, as we all looked in disbelief. Personally, I had just chosen a jury for a federal trial In Memphis, Tennessee when the federal judge presiding returned after a short recess, and informed all in the court room that the federal court house was shutting down and everyone was ordered to exit the building. As me and an associate exited the building, military squads were already stationed on top of the federal building and military helicopters hovered above the federal court house.
9/11 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in American history. However, despite the terrorist efforts to damage the USA, the attack was a testimony to the world about the courage and strength of the American people. It was a confirmation that the United States was still the greatest country on earth, and the greatest nation in the history of all mankind to date. Americans are a brave and determined bunch of patriots, and willing to fight to the death when anyone threatens to harm one of our own.
To any terrorist that might be thinking of another attack, your efforts will be in vain. There is no way you will destroy the American spirit by destroying any part of America. Any such destruction will only make America stronger and showcase how Americans, despite their political differences, will always join hands in the face of adversity. And we Americans will ultimately come forth more powerful and united after any fruitless and cowardly attack on our country.
With the ten year anniversary of 9/11 before us, we salute the courageous souls that gave their all on that infamous date, and pray for the families and friends that still suffer the loss of a loved one. We will remember that America came forth a survivor, and that there is no force on earth that can damage the American spirit and determination. And to any misguided terrorist, never forget, that you can be assured that any such foolish and futile attacks will only make Americans stronger and more united. God be with us all this 9/11 and let’s reach out a hand to a fellow American, and despite our differences realize that we all have very much in common.
