On Sunday, the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Minnesotans will memorialize loved ones and fallen heroes with church services, outdoor tributes and local concerts. In downtown Minneapolis, one local business will offer a memorial yoga class. In remembrance of 9/11, Ivy Spa will offer a free Kundalini Yoga class dedicated to the survivors, victims, and those that rose in service in response to the tragedy. The time spent in class on that first Sunday will be a time to honor those involved.
Kundalini Yoga as meditation
Kundalini Yoga is referred to as the yoga of awareness. It works to integrate the glandular system and the nervous system. The benefit is a balance between the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the self. The breath, combined with posture and mantra, focus the mind and can help to eliminate harmful negative thought patterns. Kundalini, or coiled up energy, involves breath control, chanting and meditation. The classes usually involve a spine and flexibility warm up, specific asana sequences that release coiled-up energy and relaxation. Get more information about this class at 9/11day.org.
Other oppotunities for active tributes
For other outdoor enthusiasts who want to involve a 9/11 tribute in their activities on Sunday, a full list of memorials can be found online. The Lake Harriet tribute will offer a great opportunity for families or groups of friends to ride bikes or walk to the ceremony using bike trails and walking paths. In addition the memorial service at the State Capital Mall will be convenient for those on the east side of town. Governor Mark Dayton is scheduled to attend this tribute which will take place for 2-4pm on Sunday.
