Considering that there are a dizzying array of awards shows and events that dot the landscape, the creators of such events have to be aware of this fact and plan accordingly. The challenge that these event creators face is how will their show be unique in order to carve out an identity for themselves and create an audience that will return to view their events year after year!
There are precious few awards shows that celebrate the world of horror, science fiction and fantasy that mainstream audiences are aware even exist. It is a great irony because a mere superficial glance at the top money making subjects in film, television and video games proves inconclusively that audiences are and have been hungry for the subject matter. Since nature and opportunity seekers abhor a vacuum, it was only a matter of time before the void would be filled. The wonderfully screwball and politically incorrect network called “Spike” has stepped in with the “Scream Awards”.
The first Scream Awards were broadcast in the year 2006 and was held within the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony was a refreshing departure from the often too serious awards shows like the “Oscar” and the “Grammy” award shows. In fact the irreverant and intentionally chaotic atmosphere of the Scream Awards proved to be a winnig formula and has grown in the following years.
This year’s event was held in the backlot of Universal Studios on a specially constructed set in an area called “Falls Lake”. The stage was amazingly lavish and wonderfully kitschy which was quite appropriate for the show. The stage combined elements of a lurid carnival attraction cleverly combined with a “Cirque Du Soleil” Las Vegas act. Indeed several of possible Cirque performers seem to be wandering on the celebrity carpet during the pre-show photo shoot.
This year’s ceremony was sparked in impressive style with a fine amount of star talent from the world of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror films. This year’s carpet color was black which matched the theme of the show. The carpet stroll was kicked off by an intimidating figure known as “Abyss”. He gleefully swung his nail encrusted “bat” for the collected members of the press corps. He was quickly followed by several stunningly beautiful actresses such as Christa Campbell and rising star actress, Mary Elizabeth Winstead who has a leading role in this year’s prequel film entitled, “The Thing”. It is a fascinating experience to take a pause in the action as a photographer and hear the most clever and amusing comments yelled by the other photographers designed to elicit the most inventive and commercial poses from the very patient actresses strolling along!
One can clearly judge by the decibel level of the press whom they are most excited to shoot. This is often a sign of whom everybody gathered there believe to be the most financially lucrative figure to capture. Actor Joe Manganiello sent many of the photographers scrambling while demonstrating a natural charm and charisma that has made him quite popular in his role as Alcide Herveaux in the series, “True Blood”. Manganiello surprised many with his towering height and witty sense of humor as he took extra time to pose for all of us in the press pool. Another popular celebrity walking the black carpet was the young, yet surprisingly mature actress Chloe Grace Moretz who stunned with her performances in both “Kick-Ass” and “Let Me In”. At the surprising age of fourteen, Moretz already radiates supreme confidence on the carpet well beyond her youth which pleased photographers judging by the amount of time, Moretz was requested to stay on the carpet.
The Spike network graciously allowed fans the opportunity to also witness the black carpet arrivals because they had constructed special “bleacher” seat that afforded them an excellent view of the arrivals. The celebrities demonstrated to these fans their appreciation by spending more than a couple of moments as they spoke to many of them on their way to the show.
Although it is common practice for these events to organize red carpet photo opportunities, the Spike network regularly rises above and beyond the occasion by their hospitality that they show towards the press. The black carpet area also had a fully functional bar fully manned by a very hospitable staff who also periodically served us tasty meals. Although cynical individuals may comment that this is a blatant attempt to influence the press, it is my belief that this network simply knows how to treat people in a cordial and civilized manner. It is this attention to having a great time mixed with mirthful mayhem that will always mark the Scream Awards as a ceremony to always cover and a show to always enjoy.
