Yes, he’s a former boy band alumni. Yes, he’s got a reputation for dating high profile woman and yes, he’s known for his sense of humor as well as his talents (like hosting Saturday Night Live), but isn’t it about time to recognize his acting abilities?
Just in (pun definitely intended!) 2011, Timberlake has played leading roles in 3 blockbuster films including Bad Teacher, Friends with Benefits, and In Time.
Bad Teacher was released in June of this year (recently released on DVD) and co stars Timberlake as the love interest of Cameron Diaz’s character. Many stories have been published about Timberlake and Diaz’s off camera relationship and the troubles of shooting a movie with an ex. Both stars continue to claim that they maintain a friendship throughout the production of the film, on and off camera.
The film is about Elizabeth Halsey a middle school teacher who has a long list of horrible habits including gold digging, pot smoking, swears at students, drinks heavily and only shows movies in class so she can nap. We’ve all had our share of memorable teachers, but middle school would have been a lot more interesting with Miss Halsey as your teacher.
With plans to marry her wealthy fiance, Elizabeth unexpectedly finds herself single and forced to teach for income. Convinced that having a breast enlargement will heighten her odds of marrying a rich man so she can quit teaching Elizabeth must raise the money to get the procedure done. Discovering a prize for high test scores and participating in a middle school car wash are just a few of the ways Miss Halsey attempts to raise the money. With a love triangle to win the affection of Justin Timberlake’s character Scott, and a sweet gym teacher Russell (played by Jason Segal) who has a giant crush on Elizabeth this movie is sure to deliever tons of laughs.
Friends with Benefits stars our leading man as Dylan and actress Mila Kunis as Jamie colleagues who decide they are done with relationships and just want sex. Trying to steer clear of cliché Hollywood romances, Dylan and Jamie face complications when emotion free sex becomes more than just physical contact. Jamie then finds herself becoming attached to their relationship but Dylans feelings are not the same. Can two people have a relationship that is just sex?
Controversy about Friends with Benefits came earlier this year when many compared the film to No Strings Attached starring Ashton Kutcher and Natlie Portman. Timberlake even made defensive yet joking remarks in his latest Saturday Night Live appearance that included “No that’s the other movie!”
Has our generation decided that sex is more of a need than a pleasure? Is having no attatchment sex ever a good idea? Friends with Benefits will be released on DVD this December and our audience will have to decide.
Lastly, opening tomorrow (10/28/11) in theaters, Timberlake stars in In Time. Welcome to a world where time has become the ultimate currency. You stop aging at 25, but there’s a catch: You’re genetically engineered to live only one more year, unless you can buy your way out of it. The rich “earn” decades at a time (remaining at age 25) becoming essentially immortal, while the rest beg, borrow, and steal enough hours to make it through the day. When Timberlakes character Will Salas is falsely accused of murder, he is forced to go on the run with a beautiful hostage played by Amanda Seyfried. Living minute to minute, the duo’s love becomes a powerful tool in their war against the system.
Justin Timberlake’s schedule never seems to stop and neither does his cameos in the tabloids. 2011 also was brought controversy when Timberlake was asked if he smoked marijuana. His reply was “Absolutely… The only thing pot does for me is gets me to stop thinking. Sometimes I have a brain that needs to be turned off. Some people are just better high.” We must admit, he may not be the bet role model for the children, but it doesn’t seem to be effecting his opportunity to act.
