Autumn in Connecticut is one of the most glorious times of year, with cool breezes, crisp apples, and plenty of outdoor activities for the whole family. With cooler weather, changing leaves, and the abundance of pumpkins and mums, comes a veritable cornucopia of family activities in the Hartford area and surrounding towns. Families can spend a day navigating many of local farms’ corn mazes.
Lyman Orchards, a farm located in Middlebury, Connecticut, carves out a four-acre corn maze each fall. This year, participants can print coupons for savings off admission to help with costs for growing families. In addition to the corn maze, visitors can enjoy freshly baked goodies and a country store with fruits, vegetables, local vendors, and autumn harvest pumpkins and gourdes.
This past weekend kicked off the Southington Apple Harvest Festival. Continuing into next weekend, October 8-9, this family-friendly activity boasts free admission, parking, and entertainment. Attendants can also peruse numerous food stands and crafts tables. With no obligation for monetary contribution, families of all ages and sizes can enjoy a day with the ones they love, at little to no cost.
If Southington is a little out of the way, the Glastonbury Applefest, held October 15-16, offers another affordable way for families to step outside and enjoy the arrival of the fall weather. Admission is $5 per person, with a cap of $20 per family for those with more than four members. Families can enjoy food, amusement rides, contests, road races, arts and crafts, and a variety of live entertainment.
For families looking for affordable ways to spend a weekend, festivals are the perfect way to celebrate autumn in New England.
