If you have been in the Ralph’s Wine Store’s Wine Department on PCH in Long Beach, you have probably met Alex Tenorio, the Wine Steward. Alex is a young man with a passion for wine. He loves talking about wine, drinking different wines and learning about wines from his training and experiences. And, he loves talking about wine with his customers.
Alex began at Ralph’s over three years ago, initially wanting to be in store management, and then later, after getting to assist in the Wine Department, wanting to become a Store Wine Steward. As he worked with the wines in the store, he became more and more enamored with learning about the wines he was selling. With his enthusiasm and outgoing personality, it was not long before he was promoted to the position of Store Wine Steward. And he is as delighted as can be with his responsibilities.
Alex has a self-described “serious passion” about wine. He feels he is blessed with a “high-class clientele” (his words) and loves to help educate them on the various wines the store carries.
While he is always enthusiastic about Pinot Noir’s, he tries to get his customers to try some of the new Syrahs and Zinfandels the store has in stock. With Ralph’s continually bringing in new and exciting wines, Alex is able to steer customers into some exciting new tastes.
With many whites on the shelf, Alex really enthuses over the Russian River Chardonnays. He feels the Carneros region produces some of the best wines in the state. He is also excited by the Pinot Grigios from Santa Margarita, calling them a true favorite of his.
To get information for his wine discussions with his customers, Alex frequently reads up on and studies about the history of wines in the regions of the world. Since he enjoys teaching others about the wines he discovers, he is able to bring in the background of the regions and the wines he likes and that the store carries. Alex says he is able to balance his teaching others with the sharing of information from his customers. He is grateful when he can learn more about wines from long time, experienced wine aficionados.
When Alex is not working at the store or studying about wine, he is focused on film making. He enjoys doing documentaries and hopes to be able to devote more time to that hobby in the future.
Stop by Ralph’s on PCH and ask for Alex. He’s in the Wine Department with a big grin on his face, working and talking about wine. Tell him the Wine Examiner sent you. You will get a smile and a lot of knowledge about the wines in the store.
