Amazon.com has promised to make a paid app free every day in the Amazon Appstore, and today’s app is Gem Spinner II.
Gem Spinner II is priced at $1.99 in the Android Market. It is normally priced at $2.00 in the Amazon Appstore. As we noted previously, prices sometimes differ between the two stores.
Gem Spinner II is described as follows:
Spin Your Way Around the World
Ready to go on a treasure hunt? Gem Spinner II: Water Quest is the sequel to the hit puzzle game, offering a twist on the traditional “match three” game play. You’re a globe-trotting archaeologist trying to restore gems taken from priceless artifacts. How do you do this? Puzzle boards, of course!
Each board contains colored gems encased in pieces of different shapes and sizes. Switch adjacent gems within a piece to line up three or more in a row. They’ll vanish and be replaced by more gems. Make as many gem matches as you can to reach a high score on each level.
Piece de Resistance
The twist to Gem Spinner II’s game play lies in those pieces. You can move the pieces around and rotate them to make for matches that aren’t otherwise possible. That new flexibility is what makes this game special.
But they’ll also add complexity to your strategy. Each time you make a gem match, that part of a piece goes dark. If the entire piece is dark, it vanishes completely. Clear away the smaller pieces too early, and you’ll be stuck for matches to get rid of the big ones. You’ll have to plan your matches carefully to get ahead.
Here Comes the Sun… Unfortunately
But that planning had better be quick, because you’re working under a time limit. Take too long, and nasty suns appear to block piece movement and mess up your carefully laid plans.
Fortunately, you can also earn sparkling gems that add ultra-flexible one-cell pieces to the board. You can also use Casual Mode, which turns off the time limit for a more relaxing experience.
There are puzzle boards waiting for you all around the world, from the jungles of Central America to the shores of the Caribbean. Complete all levels at one destination to unlock the next. Fifty levels across five locations, all accompanied by beautiful background graphics, will keep up interest for a long time to come.
Earn as many stars as you can on each level, and shoot for that elusive and difficult Perfect award. There are even challenging puzzle levels with set gems and goals that’ll really test your mettle!
So what are you waiting for? Those gems aren’t going to be matching themselves!
Gem Spinner II has a 4.5-star rating in the Android Market, and a 3.5-star rating in the Amazon Appstore.
It’s another match three game, which led to some one-star ratings in the Amazon Appstore (without trying the game). There was also some “permissions paranoia,” as well.
We do acknowledge that sometimes you wonder why developers need to permissions to certain things. We really appreciate it when they fully list the reasons behind their choices, to perhaps calm the paranoia.
The earlier game, Gem Spinner, was also a FAOTD (Free App of the Day) at the Amazon Appstore.
Those who are considering “buying” a Free Amazon Appstore app might want to consider what it means to developers.
Amazon.com opened up the Appstore despite a lawsuit by Apple, which has previously trademarked the term “App Store.” Microsoft has filed an appeal against that trademark, saying the term is too generic. Amazon.com has responded to the lawsuit in the same manner.
