Amazon.com has promised to make a paid app free every day in the Amazon Appstore, and today’s app is Beat the Traffic Plus.
Beat the Traffic Plus is priced at $3.99 in the Android Market. Meanwhile, it is normally priced at $3.99 in the Amazon Appstore. As we noted previously, prices sometimes differ between the two stores.
Beat the Traffic Plus is described as follows:
Avoid the Problems of Traffic Congestion
Commuting in densely populated metropolitan areas is challenging. Going to work or home, getting the kids to school, getting shopping and errands done on time, getting to the ball game or to the party on time, all can sometimes be impossible when traffic is backed up for miles due to traffic congestion caused by accidents, highway maintenance, or other hazards.
Know Before You Get Stuck
Beat the Traffic Plus for your Android device gives you the ability to plan your drive before you go, or make adjustments during your drive. Beat the Traffic Plus automatically aggregates traffic cameras, live speed data, and incident reports from dozens of sources to give you the most accurate traffic information available, in real time. Your location automatically shows up on the map as a blue dot, with surrounding roads and freeways clearly displayed. Zoom in and out or reposition the map to the area you want to see. With the search feature, see traffic conditions in any of the 130 metropolitan areas served by the Beat the Traffic Plus app.
Take advantage of traffic cameras positioned throughout your area and destination. With access to 22,245 traffic cameras in 33 cities, you’ll see the congestion before it slows you. Take alternate routes around the jams, and make it to your destination on time.
This feature of Beat the Traffic Plus takes data from past patterns to give you amazingly accurate predictions of traffic congestion based on time of day. Know before you go!
Accident Reports and Roadwork Alerts
Not all accidents or other road slow-downs are equal. Beat the Traffic Plus gives you alerts to accidents but also details about the incident so you can judge how severe the slowdown may be and how long traffic may be snarled. Armed with this knowledge, you can make plans to avoid getting stuck when you’re on the road.
Color-Coded Traffic Speeds
Current conditions are clearly shown with color codes on major arteries. Green: good; Orange: slow; Red: severe slowdown.
Too late to avoid a slowdown? You can now report traffic incidents via the Beat the Traffic Plus app. Just tap the Report button at the top-right of the screen, and file a report about an accident, a construction slowdown, or a road hazard.
- Covers 130 metropolitan areas in 3 countries
- Reports an average of 3,371 traffic incidents every day
- Has over 1,300,000 mobile app downloads and growing
- Allows you to show or hide cameras, incidents, and roadwork alerts
- Allows you to choose whether to show your location on the map
Beat the Traffic Plus has a 4.2-star rating in the Android Market and a 2.5-star rating in the Amazon Appstore.
It’s another one of those instances of a huge difference between the Android Market and the Amazon Appstore, in terms of ratings. It seems as though the app isn’t providing real-time GPS data, and requires a subscription to a $20 desktop app, as well. Comparison between the free crowd-sourced Waze didn’t help the app.
Those who are considering “buying” a Free Amazon Appstore app might want to consider what it means to developers.
Amazon.com opened up the Appstore despite a lawsuit by Apple, which has previously trademarked the term “App Store.” Microsoft has filed an appeal against that trademark, saying the term is too generic. Amazon.com has responded to the lawsuit in the same manner.
