Our “American Dream” conversation with Jason Stapleton was so interesting that it stretched out a long time. In Part I, we covered his childhood (which was very challenging), his transformative experience in the Marines, and his journey toward another stint overseas – this time as a Blackwater contractor.
Here in Part II, we pick up Jason’s story as he builds on the foundation of his maturation in the Marines by growing into a businessman – teaming with Todd Brown to form “Triple Threat Trading” in Kansas City.
T: I understand that you began your own professional education program while serving overseas. You started teaching yourself how to be a trader in the foreign exchange market (Forex) because you had plenty of spare time, it was a way to grow new skills, you could earn some extra money, and it did not cost as much as college. I know that most people who start in Forex lose money and get frustrated. How did you handle that?
J: Remember when I told you about that “inner voice” I developed while in the Marines? I learned that I could do far more than I ever thought I could. Even though my mind would frequently tell me to “quit” and my mind would question my ability or my judgment, I taught myself to set extremely lofty goals to always refuse to accept failure.
T: So your Marine experience has been a long-term transformative experience in your life! Did anything else happen which set you upon the life course which you travel today?
J: One of the best things that happened to me while I was learning to trade was becoming acquainted with Todd Brown, who is now my business partner. We met when I took his trading course as part of my continuing education overseas. Over the course of our long distance interactions, we discovered that we shared many interests, values, plans, and dreams. We soon became fast friends. Therefore, when I decided to leave the overseas contracting business, Todd was very supportive! He even used his network to find me opportunities to begin working with traders in Kansas.
As time moved on and our relationship grew, we started to work together and gave birth to what is now “Triple Threat Trading” – a hybrid combining the development of trading tools (which can enable customers to better gauge entry and exit points in their trading) with holistic trading education. Todd focuses on equities and futures, while I focus on the Forex market.
T: What do you mean by “holistic” trading education?
J: Many (if not most) vendors in the trading business focus primarily on training customers how to use their indicators or their “system”. We have learned that the only truly helpful trading education begins inside of the person who wants to become a trader. So we take a good share of time to address personal and psychological issues. We explain how the cerebral cortex functions and how important it is to focus on repetition in training, so the mind will learn to automatically focus on the most helpful aspects of a trading chart (for example, one should always look for “structure to the left”). We also try to help our students move through an accelerated experience of replacing the negative “inner voice” (which can be so self-destructive) with constructive coping skills and positive goal-setting – just as I did in the Marines. So we try to train “the whole person.”
T: I can attest to the ways in which you and Todd differentiate yourself from the majority of trading “vendors”. I have been put on practically every “trading” marketing list under the sun. Therefore, every week, there are at least 3-4 messages from a number of trading outfits which push this system, that indicator, this foolproof method, or that “you can’t afford to pass it up” opportunity. They all promise the world … and yet generally deliver only disappointment. Much to my relief, you and Todd have not been like that.
In fact, in sharp contrast, I have been amazed that you have run a free “BOOT CAMP” for budding Forex traders during the past few years … long on education and short on promotion. I know that costs you well over $3,000 a day to run—which I think is extraordinary.
J: Thanks, Tom. I’m glad you recognize that. But I truly love what I do. The trading markets are a love and a passion. I find infinite pleasure in the daily challenge of trading. I also enjoy business. But what I most enjoy is BUILDING the business. In fact, contrary to what many might think, I enjoy building the business as much as I enjoy building my own trading portfolio.
I love training folks. I find fulfillment in sensing “light bulbs” coming on for students because of the education and support I provide. I enjoy meeting a wide variety of folks among my hundreds of customers. And many of them are extremely generous and kind in their expressions of appreciation for what I offer to them! What could be better than that? Talk about an “American Dream”!
I hope that in 10 years, Todd and I are still partners and I am still doing what I absolutely love… as well as finding great fulfillment and fortune in doing it, so I can provide for the family I so love!
T: Tell us about your family.
J: My wife and my kids are the most important people in my world. Everything I do is for them. When I was growing up in rural Kansas, we didn’t have much of anything. To make matters more difficult, there was a great deal of stress around us. I want to spare my family from all of that. In fact, I do my best to ensure that my kids have more than enough. Family comes first in my “American Dream!”
T: Thanks so much, Jason. Best of luck to you in the years ahead!
