Activision might be known for sometimes beating a brand into the ground *cough* “Guitar Hero” *cough*. But otherwise, they do make the effort in some cases to bring something new or different to a current or in this case classic favorite. In this case we have the swanky new sparkling version of GoldenEye 007 reloaded for the PS3 and the 360. Those of you with a Wii might have been able to play a very similar version of this that was released a while ago. This version will feature some of the same and some other different items that will surely get you engrossed.
Those of you familiar enough with the game are probably smart enough to know that this game was originally released over a decade ago for the Nintendo 64. During that time I was in college trying to figure out how to balance life and school and all that mishuggnah. Well, one of my best memories is tied to this game. The guys on my dorm floor would get together and just play the four player split screen for hours on end. Sometimes we would find ourselves to emerge the next day to a brazenly destroyed room littered with empty cans of Natural Light. Of course, we would always ignore the mess and just continue to play the game. We eventually were able to get our schoolwork done in the hour or so before class so no particular harm in gaming…heh.
This reboot of the classic shooter will give new players a lot of great options to try out. For example, multiplayer in this game will be HUGE. Not only do they have the classic split screen but in this version they have also included a 16 player online mode that you will be able to cut your teeth on for both systems.
When talking about online multiplayer, It is great to see that in addition to all of the original maps and modes that existed in the original game, They have also added five new game modes for those of you who play things other than deathmatch. my favorite new mode is called “Bomb Defuse.” In this iteration, the teams are both enemy factions that are trying to plant a bomb at one of two targets in a map. Whichever manages to detonate the bomb will be the winner. I enjoyed that instead ov having your traditional good versus evil fight, both of the teams want the glory of destroying the good guys.
In addition to the new modes, there are also four new maps to play on and all new weapons and classic weapons to assault the opposing team. Of course the weapons from the classic game will still be there such as Oddjob’s throwing hat. Now there will also include classic character weapons like the Moonraker Laser Pistol and Dr. Kananga’s Shark Gun.
Also included for playstation users is support for the PlayStation Move and the Sharp Shooter. After trying my hand at a few of levels using the sharp shooter, it had became known that I should stick with sitting down with a controller in hand. The controller did not feel like it was calibrated correctly for my position on the floor and hopefully, we will be able to address it when the review copy becomes available.
This version of 007 also includes Daniel Craigs rendition of the classic spy, complete with full voicework and character animations. In addition to that, we will see the story that was written by Bruce Fierstein who was the original writher for the first movie.
Suffice to say, the team at Eurocom has a lot to add to this beloved classic. By adding pretty much everything that they could thnink of to this game, I have no doubt that they will be keeping the spirit of this title held closely to the original and hopefully will create a great experience for players that have never had the chance to pick up that old N64 controller.
GoldenEye 007 Reloaded will be available on Nov 1, 2011 on PS3 and Xbox 360
