In the second part of the interview, Din Thomas talks a little more about amateur fighting and his future plans in MMA.
First, Din offers his perspective on what he feels is the biggest thing amateur fighters need to work on:
“They need to understand that amateur level fighting is to gain experience. While, it should be taken serious for your health reasons, it shouldn’t be taken so serious to the point where you are not trying to work on your game, or trying to increase your skill level. Amateurs need to understand that they are amateurs for a reason, to gain experience. So that when they turn pro, they can take that experience as a pro and not suffer and learn those lessons as a pro. A lot of amateurs think that amateur fighting is like the UFC, and it’s not, don’t treat it like that. You can have losses as an amateur and it doesn’t matter, nobody cares.”
When amateurs are looking to get into shape Din gives similar advice:
“It’s all about gaining experience and conditioning your body, and mind to do certain things. So, if you’re an amateur competitor, you need to start now and learn how to train properly. Learn how to condition yourself, learn how to have the psychology of a fighter, learn the mentality, and all the little nuances of being a fighter. You need to learn how to develop a game plan, learn what works for you as far as conditioning, and learn from your mistakes. Pay attention to what you are doing as an amateur because these things that are working for you as an amateur, can carry over as a pro and develop off these little things. Anybody can be a fighter if you pay attention to your mistakes, learn from them, and condition yourself from those experiences and grow off that.”
Recently, Din was scheduled to fight in the main event of Fight Time 7: The Return of Din Thomas. However, Din got into a car accident on the way to the venue and was not able to fight. This was an unfortunate turn of events for Din, as it was his first time getting back into the cage in nearly two years. Though he could have taken this negatively, Din focused on the positive and discussed his future plans:
“Since the incident with me and the last fight, it gave me another perspective. The universe, God, works in mysterious ways and He always has a plan. The universe has a way of mapping things out, and designing it for you to do what you need to do in life to make you more productive to your fellow man and the environment. I feel like there was a reason I didn’t fight. So, instead of griping and complaining about it, I had to eventually accept the fact that I didn’t fight. But it did give me a whole new outlook that I still want to fight. Sometimes I feel like I need to be in a big show at a higher level. You know, I was doing this fight just for kicks and I think that if I am going to fight I should probably be in a bigger show. I think that I am certainly big show material. If I am going to do fights like this, then I need to approach them with the mentality that I am going to get back in the big show, or not do them at all, and just get back into the big show. So now I know this, and I am just going to accept that fact and either go for a big show, or get another fight for a big show. But I am looking to get back in January or February. Prior to that, I want to do some grappling competitions.”
Din feels that his future lies in the 145 pound weight class and when asked if he was looking to get back into the UFC he said:
“Yeah, without a doubt. I have been with them for a long time and I always said that I wanted to end my career with them. Things kind of didn’t work out after I lost to Josh Neer. But I have grown as a person since then, I have been able to do a lot of other things and expand my horizons as a human being without fighting. But now I think that as I grow, I want to go back to fighting and I would like to end my career in the UFC, very similar to how Chris Lytle did it.”
This is great news, as Din is a talented fighter and would put on great fights in the UFC or any organization he fights for. Have any dream match ups for Din, feel free to discuss them in the comments section below.
Finally, Din is a man of multiple talents. Not only does he enjoy fighting but he also likes to entertain as well. This has driven him to perform improv, as well as, do a little acting. Right now he is in the process of working on a movie called “Hit or Miss” with Tom Stedham. So, check him out in this upcoming film as well as in the ring, either way you will be entertained.
