Concerning the “cross” that is erected at “ground zero” in New York; the whole incident (the destruction of the Twin Towers) is not God’s fault – so don’t blame it on Him. The devil is the entity that is to blame for the calamity. It is satan who has reign over this earth and people have the choice to listen to satan or not listen. Many people did suffer and many did die but think of all the ones who were saved. American Atheists has filed a lawsuit in the state, not federal, court in New York (read complaint here).
During the disaster of “911” there were many lives lost in the air, in NYC, and in Washington DC. Many more could have died, nonetheless, God is not the culprit. As Rabbi Kushner book is entitled: “Why Bad Things Happen to Good People”, we know why the devil chooses some people to leave this earth (his territory) before their allotted time. What we also know is that God is also here on the earth to be with those who put their trust in Him. He is here to comfort and console those who may be grieving another person’s death. God ensures eternal life (referenced 30 times in scripture) to those who are here and those who have gone on to heaven. Yes, there is a life to come and something to look forward to. We are to live and enjoy our time while we are here on earth while we can. It’s not promised how long we have when we don’t adhere to the teachings of the Holy Scriptures. We are promised a certain amount of days (Gen. 6:3), but that time can sometimes be cut short due to our own fault or due to events beyond our control. Any of us can be crossing the street and be hit by a car, fall and strike our head or succumb to a physical attack; and our life on this earth is over.
True, the murder of the youth in Norway was a travesty yet who is truly to blame. Only God is infallible and those young souls have been removed from this earth prematurely. The murderer will have to pay and justice will be served. You may say that people get away with murder, true (see Casey Anthony story), but regardless of what you may say, we don’t live in a perfect world.
The “cross” which was crafted out of the metal from what was left of the twin towers is a reminder of the lives that were lost yet not forgotten. Would it have made any difference if the symbol was other than a “cross”? Would it have made ‘non-believers’ any happier and what would it have proven? The “cross” (displayed properly) is a symbol of HOPE and eternal life. Now, how does that make you feel?
