For 17-year old Austin Reed of Bakersfield, racing came natural and early in his life. He is the son of Dave Reed, and championship winning NASCAR car owner and life long supporter of racing who was quick to share his love of racing with his young son. And while racing has become his own passion and will likely play a large role in his adult life, this high school honors student knows what is important in order to secure that racing future. Straight A’s have been the norm for Reed and he hopes to transition his academic success into racing success this weekend as he competes in the prestigious USCLI Legend Car Nationals held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Reed qualified for the national event by winning a qualifying race earlier this season securing him a spot in the field. But securing his spot and beating the best of the best are two completely different challenges. The USLCI Legend Car Nationals brings together the top Legend Car drivers from across the United States and Reed is looking forward to the challenge.
This is by far the single biggest race of the season,” Reed said. “If you want to be the best you have to beat the best as they say and I really like are chances this weekend. We have a great car and my experience at Vegas will hopefully give me an edge.
Reed spent his summer vacation back in Charlotte, NC racing in the Legends Summer Shootout at Lowes Motor Speedway and came away with a new found respect and knowledge of the game. “It is a completely different world back there,” Reed offered. “We lived, ate, and breathed racing 24/7. Most of us out West race as a hobby but back East it is all business all the time. It was a blast and I learned a lot that made me a better driver and mechanic.”
When Reed is not working on a research paper or completing a civics project, he spends his time in the shop at Joiner Motorsports in Bakersfield where he does everything from car and trailer maintenance to complete chassis rebuilds. He and his crew chief Ryan Sebek make time to game plan and prep not only his race cars but other cars in the shop.
“I love working in the shop,” Reed said. “I know every inch of my Legend car and enjoy trying new things. That is what is really great about this type of car. Most of the parts are spec, so in order to gain an advantage you just have to be willing to try new and different things.”
Reed hopes to continue to climb up the racing ladder and move into Late Model Racing this next year but the thrill of driving a Legend car captivates his soul. “These cars have such great power to weight ratio which makes them so fun to drive,” Reed offered. “This car is truly a driver’s car.”
Reed is planning on going to college this fall and majoring in mechanical engineering but for this weekend his sole attention is on the bright lights of Las Vegas where he hopes to etch his name into the record books at the USLCI Legend Car Nationals.
