This holiday season has the gaming world sitting on the edge of its seat- the fall is simply loaded with great titles that will be filling up gamers’ Christmas lists wherever the holiday is celebrated. Here is a look at the star studded release dates for this newly official autumn.
Rest of September
Fall may only catch the tail end of September, but that doesn’t mean the month has no more great releases left.
Today is the biggest day for releases, with FIFA 12 the headliner for all platforms. Also coming out today as a PS3 exclusive is the Ico and Shadow of Colossus Collection, including HD upgrades for both classic games from Team Ico.
The PC is also getting an interesting release on Wednesday, Focus Home Interactive’s A Game of Thrones: Genesis. This is the first attempt at a game adaption of the A Song of Fire and Ice book series by George R. R. Martin, which has also been made into a hit HBO series, A Game of Thrones. It will be a strategy game where the player attempts to win the Iron Throne using diplomatic, military, and economic means, while of course underhanded tactics will come into play, true to the series.
September’s strong finish is matched by October’s strong start, with a highly anticipated multi-platform title being slated for release on Oct. 4, Rage. A first person shooter by Bethesda, this post-apocalyptic reality will have the player combating mutants and hostile factions of other human survivors.
This momentum is picked up on Oct. 11, when the Ace Combat series gets its newest installation, Assault Horizon. One of Namco Bandai’s heaviest hitting franchises, Assault Horizon has the series looking better than ever.
A week later another star franchise gets a new release, with Rachet & Clank: All 4 One. One of Sony’s much coveted exclusives; the new R&C is a departure from the series’ typical gameplay, having a focus on a four player multiplayer story mode.
Then, on Oct. 25, Battlefield 3 makes its debut, spicing up the FPS holiday competition before Call of Duty enters the Ring.
Another notable franchise release is NBA 2K12.
After a high profile October, November comes in with a bang of atomic scale.
Three games make their opening on the same day as the month, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, another Goldeneye remake, and a new Lord of the Rings game: War in the North. All three are worth some excitement. Goldeneye 007: Reloaded is a new and improved remake of the classic 64 shooter for the 360 and PS3 that promises more than the Wii remake.
Another PS3 exclusive, Uncharted 3 amassed numerous pre-release awards stemming from its E3 showing this year. The franchise has quickly become one of Sony’s best weapons, Nathan Drake’s third adventure is sure to impress again.
Now this Lord of the Rings game has been flying under the radar, but it has at least this journalist quite excited. The reason to be excited is that the story takes place in the already epic world of Middle Earth, but goes beyond the story of the books and movies we nerds all know and love. As the title would imply, the game focuses on the events and heroes to the far north while Frodo and the Fellowship head towards Mordor, and frankly, it’s an RPG- I couldn’t think of a better way to immerse one’s self in this new yet familiar world.
Two more great buys come out on the eighth day of the month. The first should be a true delight for fellow Solid Snake fans, as the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection will be ready for your PS3 or 360: it includes Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, 3: Subsistance, and Peace Walker.
The second is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the final contender in the three sided melee that is the FPS shooter competition this fall. CoD vs. Battlefield is definitely the matchup to watch, but Rage should make a very interesting dark horse.
However, perhaps the most anticipated game of the season drops on Nov. 11, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. No game has looked better in trailers so far, hence the selection for the video attached to this article. This is going to be a difficult title to pass on for any gamer.
Four days later and, yep, you guessed it: two more big names enter the stage. Both games are coming out for the PS3, 360, and PC. Assassins Creed: Revelations is one, and this one promises answers to tie the previous entries in the series together. Saint’s Row: The Third is the other, and the scale of the Saints’ crime story has become bigger than ever.
Towards the end of fall, the hot releases finally wrap up for the season, but not without two more potential blockbusters. On Nov. 20, the Wii comes out with a golden exclusive of its own, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Weapon play for Link’s adventure this time will rely heavily on the Wii-mote, while the gameplay switches it up from traditional Zelda games, promising some refreshing moments for long time fans.
After the frenzy that consumes most of the fall/ holiday season, there is only one highly anticipated release left for December, with the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic is finally available for PC gamers 20 days into the month. An absolute nerd delicacy, the game looks undeniably fun, especially if the Star Wars universe is already one you love.
Did I miss anything? I hope not, this list is huge! But just in case I did, leave a comment Dayton gamers!
Good luck to you gamers and your wallets this season!
