When God give a baby that very first breath, for many in the medical field, it is just another breath. Yet, for those that truly celebrate the very essence of God’s gift, of life, it is a divine and remarkable miracle. Tuesday, September 28, 2011, Baby Joseph” was taken back by God, after living 20 months, and inspiring a world about God’s message of life, that is guaranteed. You see, even though this young baby boy was suffering from a rare progressive and incurable neurologic disorder called Leigh’s disease, he was still entitled to a life determined by God.
Yet, despite the highly touted Canadian health system’s reputation for assisting patients with medical issues and challenges, when it came to defending and preserving the life of little baby Joseph Maraachli, the medical administrators at London, Ontario’s London Health Sciences Centre, decided that the death culture would be the winner, in denying baby Joseph medical care to preserve his life.
So there you had it, a Canadian medical team immersed in the culture of death, while playing lip service to Canadian medical excellence, and his loving and devoted parents Mo and Sana Maraachli of Windsor, left wondering just how they could save their baby Joseph’s life from a hospital team that somehow felt it was alright to steal life from the baby.
Mo and Sana Maraachli did not have to wonder very long about the fate of their baby boy Joseph, because Priests For Life, led by Rev. Frank Pavone, a priest and leader for the organization Priests For Life, had seen this type of callousness before. He had worked closely with right to life supporters from across America, to assist Terri Schiavo’s parents fight to preserve their daughter’s life. He and his staff intervened against same type of tacit support for medical non-interference, which would lead to the eventual death of this innocent baby.
Baby Joseph lived because the principles of life and Rev. Frank Pavone’s embrace of life values won out, as he and his staff worked diligently, to remove and transport Baby Joseph from the Canadian hospital where he was scheduled to die and brought him to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. PriestsFor Life paid for the tracheotomy that was performed upon Baby Joseph.
But is the fact that this modern day right to life drama was successful, an actual win for those who support life, over those who embrace an unfeeling and uncaring culture of death? Hardly so. The culture of death does not take a holiday, and so as supporters of life, we must not take one as well. I learned something special in working with Robert Schindler, Terri Schiavo’s father, during those first heartbreaking months and years after Terri’s forced death. Robert told me that sometimes God will use the life of innocents like his daughter Terri, who was his angel, as lessons for each of us to learn.
He believed as I do, it is the innocence of children where we learn the greatest lessons, because his daughter Terri, and Mo and Sana Maraachli’s baby son Joseph can continue to teach us what the value of life and its rich spirit, that begins at conception, truly has to impart. 1 Peter 2:2 “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.”
The innocent lives that we stand up and help to preserve is key to helping one more, and one more, and one more innocent, which is what the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network’s commitment is all about. We must do more than take notice when an innocent life is terminated by a hospital or a state, or a public poll.
You see, life is not something that can be determined by a balance sheet, or be a universal health care plan that will pick winners or losers in a medical game of medical roulette. No, we as caring and compassionate and thoughtful men and women of all faiths, all religions, and especially those who understand the tenets of our Christian faith must not abandon our values. We understand that God is the determiner of life’s beginning and of life’s ending.
We should honor the right for any innocent newborn or any person in between, to live, as if he is our own, “flesh and blood” because that is our own flesh and blood. Since God created every person born on this earth in his image, Genesis 1:27“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them,” let each stand for the other, who is part of God’s family of man.
We must make certain that the spiritually focused work of the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Networkcontinues to thrive and to grow, and to make certain that every state protects the life of an innocent, be he six minutes young, or be she 46, or 66, or 96 years old. Let your words said in the comfort of your home, be echoed with deeds that are felt in state houses in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Nevada, Texas, Florida, and Congress.
Baby Joseph’s life victory is not complete, until the right to life for the innocents is protected throughout this nation, and “One Nation under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, is also a pledge to protect the sanctity of life.
