Factor number 1: With a few exceptions, the offensive line for the Arizona State Sun Devils has been consistently outstanding for the entire season (that’s not the bad news).
Factor number 2: One other consistency throughout the whole season and before is that the Devils have had many, many injuries (still not the bad news).
Without those two factors, it’s bad news.
The ASU Sun Devils have lost two starters for the Utah game this Saturday (October 8) due to injuries suffered in the Oregon State game. Evan Finkenberg tore his meniscus and had to have surgery on Wednesday to have it repaired. He most likely will be out for 3-4 weeks. In addition, Garth Gerhart (center) sprained his ankle and will most likely be out, at least for this week. In all likelihood, the Arizona Sun Devils are going up against Utah with two first-time starters on their offensive line.
Here’s a list of the injured players and their replacements for this week:
Out: Steven Threet In: Brock Osweiler
Out: Evan Finkenberg In: Dan Knapp
Out: Adam Tello In: Mike Marcisz
Update: Adam Tello (who left the team a few weeks ago due to back pain), heard about the problems with ASU’s offensive line and decided to ask Coach Erickson to come back to help, albeit temporarily. He began practicing with the second team on Tuesday.
“The thing about Adam Tello, he’s all for the team,” Erickson said. “He’s in a lot of pain. Hopefully, he doesn’t have to play.”
Out: Garth Gerhart In: Kody Koebensky
Out: Deantre Lewis In: Cameron Marshall
Note: Offensive Tackle Aderious Simmons will probably start against Utah. (He suffered an ankle injury in the season opener against UC Davis and hasn’t played since.)
Out: Devan Spann In: Deveron Carr
Out: Junior Onyeali In: Jamaar Jarrett
Out: Omar Bolden In: Osahon Irabor
With all of the bad news, the good news is that if the Sun Devils win the game against Utah, they will pretty much have the Pac-12 (South Division) sewn up.
