There are many restaurants in Charlotte that offer bakery goods that are delicious, but not nutritious, and should be avoided for health reasons. While some may think it is okay to have such bakery items on a daily basis, evidence shows this is not a healthy choice.
Anyone who makes a trip to Amelie’s Bakery in Charlotte, or to Crumbs at Atherton Market will find treats that are not filled with additives they can’t pronounce. Bakers of these bakery items do not use the same types of unhealthy fats as commercial bakery items might contain.
If a consumer questions Adam Dukes of Dukes Bread, they will be happy to learn the ingredients in his baked items will be something they can pronounce. How many consumers understand what propylparaben is and why it is listed on the ingredients panel of some commercial baked goods? While some ingredients panels may merely state a product contains artificial colors and flavors, what does this actually include, and is it a healthy choice?
The following information was shared in an FDA report:
Trans fat is a specific type of fat that is formed when liquid oils are turned into solid fats, such as shortening or stick margarine. During this process — called hydrogenation — hydrogen is added to vegetable oil to increase the shelf life and flavor stability of foods. The result of the process is trans fat.
- Transfat can be found in many of the same foods as saturated fat, such as vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, candies, cookies, snack foods, fried foods, baked goods, and other processed foods made with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
- Also known as trans fatty acids, trans fat can be found naturally in some foods — such as animal-based foods like milk, milk products, and meat.
As a consumer, the most important thing to know about trans fat is that it behaves like saturated fat in the body by raising low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad”) cholesterol — which can increase your risk of coronary heart disease.
This is not to say an occasional bakery treat must be eliminated to remain healthy. In most situations, consumers are able to enjoy what may be considered an unhealthy food item after a healthy meal and do no harm.
Learning what is in packaged food may be one of the keys to enjoying good health. This would include all products that are considered bakery items.
