The Drunken Intellectual presents his Best of Baltimore Beer Week, featuring his favorites from each day of the extravaganza. Today, we examine Sunday, October 9th.
You may have heard some tales recently of a mysterious traveler traipsing through the land, spreading his magical potions to whomever might muster the coin. And no, this is not a long-lost entry from the Tolkien archives, or even a report from the Eastern District police station. This, friends, is a true story. The tale of a gypsy brewer, Brian Strumke, and his quest to create delicious beer wherever he goes. And on that first Sunday of Beer Week, he will bring an incredible, almost mythical, collection of his brews to Max’s Taphouse for a one-of-a-kind ridiculous event known throughout the realms as: Stillwater Ales Day.
The whole “gypsy brewer” thing is interesting on its own – borrowing time at other breweries, retaining a certain amount of freedom without that initial equipment investment – but I’m only really concerned with the final product. And Stillwater Artisanal Ales produces really (really) good, Belgian-style beer. In the end, that’s all that really matters. The problem, though, with a brewer who spends half his time in Europe, crafting concoctions here and there, is that many of his beers are hard to acquire. That’s what makes this occasion so exceptional – the sheer, nearly overwhelming quantity of Stillwater ales available. Check out the lineup here.
That’s something along the lines of 20 drafts, 20 bottles, and several casks to-be-announced. Pretty outstanding selection of brews, n’est-ce pas? Not sure what else I can say about this, but… GO! Get your lame arse off the couch and make your way to Max’s for this unprecedented display of local brewing talent. I know I will be there, with bells on (or not)… No excuses, people!
