The crisp night air numbs the feel of despair as the clouds wrap themselves ’round the moon. A scream and a howl, from a corpse and a ghoul, in the winds twist about and commune. Trick-or-Treaters with sugar-filled bellies and bags bursting with sweets, haunt the sidewalks and shadows and neighborhood streets!
Vampires, werewolves, and superheros may be on the top of everyone’s costume list this year, thanks to the plethora of movies and TV shows on the subjects. Sociopaths and Golden Age Monsters are always classic favorites. Creativity knows no bounds for this spooky holiday whose origins come from Christian and Celtic roots. All Hallow’s Eve is the eve of All Saints day where it is believed that the separation of the living and the dead becomes permeable and the donning of costumes and masks tricks roaming spirits.
Halloween is a great opportunity for photography, not only to catalog popular costumes for a particular year for a family album or Facebook upload, but also for creative ways to capture all that is spooky, creepy, and downright scary. Popular with horror movies over the years, it’s more of what you don’t see that brings about true horror. What the human mind fills in can be much scarier than what a film can portray.
The same goes for photography. Less can most certainly be more. A shadowy figure looming nearby, a ghost caught in a window, a jack-o-lantern’s creepy grin all allow for endless creative interpretations. Looking up at cloud-shrouded cathedrals, close-ups of gravestones, panning a camera to blur motion can enhance the creepy-factor of an image.
Baltimore abounds with atmospheric spaces for creative Halloween photography. Capturing images of Trick-or-Treaters hiking past tightly packed row homes, the ghost-trodden cobbles of Fell’s Point’s streets or clouds alight in moon glow behind Westminster Hall. A visit to the final resting place of the Master of the Macabre should be on all Halloween to-do lists. A tour of the Westminster Catacombs and a wink to Edgar Allen Poe’s grave will complete any Halloween festivity or start the night on the right foot!
