Why go to a boring, uptight art gallery and stare at art surrounded by art snobs when you can watch, cheer and jeer visual artists—of all media– compete, on live television, in a night club setting– complete with DJs, cocktails, and an enthusiastic crowd?! Yes! Art RockX!, hosted by Lyn Williams and DJ Lamont Young, pits local visual artists, who paint, sculpt, draw, photo, and then some, to create art “against one another”, through a 45 minute challenge to create a new work of art—no pressure! The studio is actually a nightclub, and the onsite audience, as well as the online audience, selects a “winner” through votes and art sales.
On Saturday, Sept 24th, Art RockX! filmed live at the Cellar, a gritty chic nightclub on San Francisco’s Sutter Theatre Row, featuring their “celebrity artists” round of recently top-voted local artists. The assignment was to capture “San Francisco.” The competing artists included “Team Alcatraz”: featuring Brino Ism working on nude retro-glam model, Darla the Distraction, along side with fine arts painter and Burning Man select artist of the year, Michelle Carnes, of Camp Easel Park. Team Alcatraz brought in a whole noisy fun crew of fans all the way from Santa Rosa!
The second team, “Team Twin Peaks”, consisted of master body caster, Richard Smith and professional body painter, Mariya Miloidova, working on the perfect body of model Crystal Jane Kingston Chung. And the third team, “Dancing Fog”, danced around a wall-sized canvas, artist Shaun Oertwig armed with spray cans, in combination with the brush stokes of his artist/model/singer painting partner, Fely Tchaco, from the Ivory Coast.
In the background, when DJ Lamont was not spinning Depeche Mode versus NIN mashups (YEAH!), two freaky DJ’s scratched on a gramophone. Of course, if you want to see the impressive art all these artists created, and find out who won, well, you will have to watch the show!
The best part is that there will be another San Francisco edition, coming next Saturday, October 1, at the Cellar (685 Sutter Street)—the theme: “Hot in October.” Doors open at 6:30, so you can get your drink on while the new teams prepare. The competition, as well as filming, begins promptly at 7:30. The whole party lasts until about 9:30 pm-ish.
This is not the only event Art RockX! hosts. Earlier this month, they held a Photo Scavenger Hunt, Spirits Sing competition, and other live, televised art-related competitions. Also, Art RockX! hosts shows in other parts of the country like Chicago, Miami, LA, Austin, Seattle, and such, so make sure to visit their website for upcoming live competitions in other cities, or watch online to vote.
