How to Be a Self Promoter, Be Dependable, Be Engaging and Represent Yourself Well
Self Marketing, Personal Branding and Self Promotion
Do you remember marketing class back in college? According to Wikipedia ” Promotion is one of the four elements of marketing mix (product, price, promotion, place).” One can call it, self promotion, being self serving, or you can just call it sales and marketing and (call it like it is). We use to call it the Three P’s of marketing back in college. I guess I am getting old because they have added a fourth. We all want our businesses to grow whether you work for a large fortune 500 company or a small start up venture. Along the way on your self promotion journey . People will de-friend you on facebook, they will hit “no” to your linkedin invite and people will run for the hills when they find out you have a twitter account. Just tell folks at cocktail parties that you sell something “like insurance” and they will take their martini and asked to be excused to go to the ladies room or little boy’s room. Now I don’t sell Mary Kay Cosmetics or Insurance but I do own a small business in Atlanta and I am a proud, tireless, self promoter. Self promotion has helped me raise over twenty million dollars in capital for my business in less than a one year period. Some really great business promotion sites as well as personal promotion sites are:
- Kudzu.com (Owned by HGTV)
Blogging for fun on (Blogger) has led me to over 8,000 hits a month on my island blog that talks about my favorite barrier island with no bridge. A wonderful blog site on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. This site is dedicated to providing useful, timely information that is relevant to resident and tourist that come to Daufuskie Island. . No one has ever accused me of being a shameful self promoter of Daufuskie Island before. Although one friend did hail me the unofficial mayor of the place
Why do people tend to think of self promotion as a bad thing? One of the most important lessons I learned is to always have an elevator speech. If you are riding an elevator with a prominent investor, potential client or the CEO, of Microsoft. You should be able to tell him in 60 seconds what you do, why you are great at it and how you can help him or her. That is your elevator speech. It also works well on an airplane while sitting in first class. The cocktail napkin is a great notepad for illustration. Why would people or companies not be self promoting? My mother was a teacher by trade and just to get her really worked up my father an accountant and number cruncher would say to her “those who can do, and those who can’t teach.” I have expanded it to “those who can do, and those who can’t teach and write about it.” Writing, painting, wine tasting and art collecting those things have always been hobbies for me. A skill acquired to release stress and have some fun. Now when I write an insightful article on stock market investing I am accused of being self promoting. Well hey world….Guess what ? I am self promoting and managing money is something I have done for twenty years and I am good at it. So join me, get use to it or get out of my way. You shouldn’t have to ever be embarrassed about promoting something you are passionate about. And if you are not passionate about yourself, whom besides your spouse will be?
