Sept. 30, 2011 – One of the main characters responsible for the success of the CBS sitcom of the 70s, Good Times was the middle child, Thelma. Thelma was the daughter of James and Florida Evans and sister to JJ and Michael Evans. Thelma’s character was performed by actress and now motivational speaker and author, Bern Nadette Stanis.
Bern Nadette was born Bernadette Stanislaus in Brooklyn, New York and attended and graduated from Julliard School. She studied drama and was discovered by an agent, who spoke with her mother about the role of Thelma for Bern Nadette. Once championing the role, Bern Nadette drew wide acclaim throughout the television audience the duration of the show from 1974 to 1979. Tens of thousands of young black and Hispanic men and women followed every move of the attractive, witty and impenetrable daughter of a fictional ghetto. The shooting location was at one of the (project)buildings of the Cabrini-Green Public Housing Complex in Chicago, IL.
Bern Nadette has made several appearances on television since Good Times, with one of her most recent on Girlfriends.
One of her greatest accomplishments other than being a mother of two daughters is being an author. Her book, Situation 101, Relationships: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, is currently promoted from her website, www.thelmaofgoodtimes.com. She has a second book, For Men Only, a book of poetry, that’s also available on the same website.
