Coconut Grove residents who have been waiting patiently these past couple of months for their beloved Blanche dog park to reopen after a major overhaul should be pleased with the improvements.
Blanche Park closed in August to address serious plumbing and irrigation issues plaguing the bark park on the corner of Virginia Street and Shipping Avenue. According to The Miami Herald, an estimated $140,931 was spent on the renovation.
Any visitor to the park over the past few years would have been hard pressed not to notice that the center of the park had essentially turned into a giant mud pit. Within minutes of bringing your pooch there, they would be caked in mud. Due to the constant irrigation issues, sections of the park were frequently closed to re sod the grass, much to the chagrin of park frequenters.
“I just stopped bringing my dog there,” Coconut Grove resident Kris Fadden said. “I have a white dog, so I got sick of having to bathe him every time I brought him. Plus, half the time I went sections of the park were closed off. Hopefully, they will have fixed those issues so I can start bringing him again, since he enjoys going so much.”
The park’s new design includes a large mound where the park center once stood to allow for better water runoff and less grass tear up. Many new trees were planted as well, adding to the natural beauty of the neighborhood.
Though not installed yet, there will be a new doggie water fountain placed where the old one once stood, lest your canines get thirsty after all the running around.
There were many improvements made for the human visitors as well.
The old, disgusting garbage cans have all been replaced by multiple new cans with lids, which should hopefully help to mask the smell. Also, along with each can are new stands with rolls of plastics bags to help pick up after dog waste. These were here before, but they were often not stocked and there were only one or two throughout the whole park.
Another great new feature is the crushed shell walkways. Due to the same irrigation issues that plagued the grass part of the park, the old dirt walkways were constantly muddy and gross to walk though. The new shell walks not only look nice, but will keep much of the mud and dirt at bay. Additional benches should be added over the next few weeks as well, again making this park a great place for pets and their owners to hang out.
Blanche Dog Park is located at 3070 Virginia Street, Miami, FL 33133 and is open between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. daily.
