Synopsis ~ From the producers of Shaun of the Dead, ATTACK THE BLOCK is a fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen street gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing project into a sci-fi battleground, the low-income apartment complex into a fortress under siege. Speculating that perhaps we can all get along, provided of course there’s an abundance of alien fodder to focus on, Attack the Block arms itself with quick action and even quicker wit, bringing fun, frenzy and a lighter sense of silliness to the Sci-Fi staple.
Filled with great performances and employing the same cheeky nods to nuance as the previously produced Shaun of the Dead – without relying on the fallback of a much easier, fully camp format – the kids from the block bash, stalk, and trash-talk their way through 88 minutes of carnage and comedy. And while the aliens could have indeed used a bit more budget for a better bang and the heroes’ accents are as thick as London’s famous fog, the unadulterated UFO-TKO entertainment value will certainly ring your bell.
The extras are good, but a bit unconventional, providing three separate commentaries all of which mostly deal with the same subjects. The five featurettes are the most entertaining of the lot, breaking down film production, casting, characters and a semi-redemptive spot about how much work was involved in alien production and creation, which offers a great deal of slack in the less-than opinion of the special effects.
So if you think you can handle the horror and hilarity of London’s rough-and-ready inner city set ablaze against an alien who looks like a tanked-up Trek tribble, then Attack the Block brings those familiar terrestrial words with a UK verse, “London, we have a problem.”
