With a fantastically retro style, unyielding performances and CGI that illuminates but doesn’t overpower, Captain America: The First Avenger is given an origin story worthy of his winged cowl, and while it may be safe to assume that its majority of movie-goers will be extremely familiar with the captain and his cause, others will happily learn that they too can quickly and quite enjoyably be brought up to speed.
This most recent rendition of the first Avenger – enjoying a well earned distance and distinction from the disappointing 1990 version – is a film that really concentrates on the entirety of America’s mythology, following a puny yet inwardly powerful Steve Rogers from his early rejections with the army right through to his shield-flinging super trooper.
The film does take a few liberties here and there – particularly with Bucky’s character – changing certain situations to better fit a 123 minute mold. But the attention given to both America and his equally intriguing foe; baddy to the bone Red Skull played by the delightfully dastardly Hugo Weaving; along with reacquainting readers with the Captain’s “Howling Commandos”, offers a wonderful balance of history and high adventure.
Everything from skulls to shields is covered in a fabulous offering of extras, with highlights including a remarkably comprehensive commentary by Johnston, Johnson and Ford, a peek at the new Avengers film, and a handful of deleted scenes with optional commentary.
However, the biggest draws on the whole disc are definitely the six hefty featurettes, which exhaustively pour over every aspect of the Captain America universe and provides a Marvel-ous look into both the production of the film as well as the structure, style and stunning imagination that went into the original comic.
So with a wonderful leap from page turner to moving picture, Captain America: The First Avenger is a brilliantly hip dip into stellar 50’s Sci-Fi style.
