RELATED STORY: Bob Dylan album update, including debut release of 1981 track.
The Bridge School was formed in 1986 by Pegi and Neil Young, Jim Forderer, and Dr. Marilyn Buzolich. The school assists children with severe physical impairments and complex communication needs. One of the thrusts of the program is the use of advanced augmentative and alternative communication and assistive technology. (Neil Young’s two sons have cerebral palsy.)
Starting in 1986, Neil and Pegi Young have organized and participated in all-star concerts to benefit the school. For the last quarter century, there have been yearly benefits in California, with the exception ot 1987. The musicians are expected to play “acoustic” performances, although some artists, including John Lee Hooker and Tony Bennett, featured electric guitars. (Hooker is not included in this release.)
Many name acts have appeared at the Bridge Benefit concerts over the years, including The Who, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Thom Yorke, Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney.
At Bridge II, on December 4, 1988, Bob Dylan did a short but spectacular set at the Oakland Coliseum, the only benefit not held at the Mountain View (California) Shoreline Amphitheater. (Young had appeared with on stage with Dylan earlier that year during the early days of the “Never Enning Tour”.) Other acts at Bridge II included Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Nils Lofgren, Billy Idol, Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Tracy Chapman.
Dylan performed his acoustic set with guitarist G.E. Smith. Here’s the set list:
1. San Francisco Bay Blues (Jesse Fuller)
2. Pretty Boy Floyd (Woody Guthrie)
3. With God On Our Side
4. Girl From The North Country
5. Gates Of Eden
6. Forever Young
Artists on the collection – besides the ones mentioned above – include Dave Matthews, No Doubt, Gillian Weich, Tom Waits, Patti Smith, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Brian Wilson, David Bowie, Simon & Garfunkel, R.E.M., and Neil Young with Crazy Horse and Crosby Stills & Nash, among many others.
The track listings for the CDs and the DVDs differ, but often overlap. The DVD also includes documentary footage. For complete list, please click on the slide show at the left.
Previous Bridge School releases include 1997’s Bridge School Concerts 1 on CD, and various download-only selections.
