Another fine turnout is virtually assured as another in a series of popular Bobby Combs Century Doubles tournaments will be contested at AMF Bradenton at 2 p.m. next Sunday (Sept. 25).
The unique tournament format requires doubles teams to consist of partners whose combined ages total 100 or more; hence, the name Century doubles. The series was suspended during the summer months, but a number of such events will be interspersed throughout the winter-league season.
Entry fee will be $30 per doubles team, plus $5 per bowler for each entry into the optional Alibi Doubles event, in which bowlers use scores rolled by other (non-partner) tournament competitors for qualifying on a separate prize list. Advance entries are encouraged, but walk-ins will be accepted provided that lanes are available.
In the most-recent Century Doubles — conducted April 17 at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes — Jim Gilmore and Shane Askins topped a 78-team field. Previous winners included: Earl Hayden and Lyle Kinney (Feb. 13, 2011, at Englewood Bowl); Mike Aleshire and Bob Pazur (Dec. 5, 2010, at AMF Venice); Kent Wagner and Ray Lofthouse (Sept. 19, 2010, at Sarasota Lanes; Nick Smith and Rick Isom (May 30, 2010, at AMF Bradenton; Roger King and Glenn Jessup (April 11, 2010, at AMF Gulf Gate); and Gina Quiroz and Larry Owen (Jan. 31, 2010, at Englewood Bowl).

* HALL OF FAME GOLF RESULTS: The foursome of Ted Bogusz, Al Ferrigno, Shane Askins and Hunter Spitler captured top honors in last Sunday’s (Sept. 11) Al Cerully Memorial golf tournament, contested on a four-person scramble format at IMG Golf & Country Club in Bradenton.
Winning a tie-breaker for the runner-up position was the team of Mike Wirtz, Chris Wirtz, Craig Sopetto and Tim Aykroid, while third place went to Donny Johnson, Norm Barlay, Danny Barlay and Don Still.
The fifth annual fund-raising event, conducted by the Sarasota-Manatee County Men’s Bowling Hall Of Fame, drew 25 teams and raised around $2,000, with a portion of the proceeds earmarked for the local youth scholarship fund.
* WOMEN’S STATE TOURNAMENT: It’s not too early to start making plans for the Florida State Women’s Bowling Association’s annual championship tournament, which will be contested at two area centers next spring.
The four-player team event will take place at Sarasota Lanes, while doubles and singles will be at AMF Bradenton. The 2012 tournament will span five weekends, starting on May 5-6 and concluding June 2-3.
Entry fee has been set at $25 per woman per event, plus an optional all-events fee of $5. In addition, optional scratch competition is offered at $5 per event. There will be only one tournament division, and handicap will be 100 percent of 220.
Complete rules and information can be found on the entry blanks, which will circulate in each area bowling establishment. In addition, you can view the official entry blank by clicking here.
* LOCAL ASSOCIATION TOURNEYS: Because of the fact that the Sarasota-Manatee County area will be hosting the 2012 women’s state tournament, the local association has exercised an option not to conduct an annual women’s open tourney next year.
Dates for other annual Sarasota-Manatee County USBC Association tournaments are as follows: The senior championships will be held at Englewood Bowl on Nov. 12-13 and Nov. 20, the 700-Plus tourney will be at Sarasota Lanes on Feb. 19, and the open championships will be at Sarasota Lanes on the weekends of Feb. 25-26 and March 3-4.
