Bolton Lakes area is rather nice this time of year, but little access is available after the fee based public parks close in winter. Of course there is the back way in. Back way in you ask?
Yes and no; there is no roadway but rather a DEP right of way across the mountain top, directly to the dam that divides middle and lower lake from each other. Fishermen have known of this place for years, it is a pretty nice walk to the two lakes, after all you get a grassy driveway to hike down, that cuts through to boulder strewn hilltops. Where you can walk out on the dam that divides both lakes and get incredible photos. You can travel along one of the many unmarked trails that seem to wind around this side of the Lake.
This great area was a surprise to this Examiner as well, but this unmarked DEP access point to the lake even has parking along Bolton Road. So spend a moment of your time and take a hike down to the Bolton lakes and enjoy the views before the snow takes over. Check out the great foliage along the lake this Examiner took pictures of, by viewing the slide show.
