Boreal Mountain Resort resumed snowmaking operations Tuesday night (Oct. 25) with the hopes of possibly opening this Friday for skiing and snowboarding..
A cooler air mass has pushed its way into the region allowing the snowmakers at Boreal to get back to work. The forecast is calling for an additional snowmaking opportunity overnight on Wednesday also.
The snow created over the next two nights will lay a base for what hopes to be another early opening for Boreal. Boreal will continue making snow as conditions permit, and will open the resort as early as possible allowing skiers and riders access to another early season.
The first California ski resort to annually run its lifts first each year is Boreal. It appears that won’t change this year with Boreal spokesman Jon Slaughter saying Wednesday morning that he believes the resort may open this Friday.
Wanting to make sure its snowmaking capability was ready to function properly, Boreal made snow on Oct. 7.
Last season Boreal had skiers and snowboarders heading up its mountain Oct. 29, but Boreal might open just a little earlier this season.
“Boreal is shooting for another early opening, with Halloween always being the target. Our goal is to always get guests on the hill early in the season – it’s what we are known for,” Slaughter said.
Boreal naturally has Mother Nature and its advanced snowmaking equipment to thank for its early openings. Boreal’s upgraded snow-making system added 15 new snow guns last year to provide the firepower to cover a section of its mountain with man-made snow.
Boreal is located off Interstate 80 at Donner Summit. It has a base elevation of 7,200 and is 7,700 feet at its summit.
