Every year in October, women and men across the world gather to educate, participate and even celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Through myriad events ranging from bra fittings to pink glove dances to races, we come together to increase awareness while raising funds for breast cancer research. In just a few short weeks, we will once again be ‘thinking pink’ and how each of us can help this ongoing battle.
Probably most familiar to us all is the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the world leader of the breast cancer movement and the largest source of non-profit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. They work to empower people, save lives and ensure quality care for all, plus provide funding for research into a cure for breast cancer. Their two biggest events each year are the Race for the Cure® (coming in October to many locales across the nation) and the Komen 3-Day for the Cure®. Both events are wonderful ways to get involved and help put an end to this deadly and disfiguring disease.
In the lingerie world, we have another way of fighting breast cancer – the Wacoal Fi(gh)t for the Cure®. Wacoal, a leading manufacturer of women’s intimate apparel, specializes in elegant, great fitting bras for women of all ages and sizes. To that end, they created two programs to bring greater awareness of breast cancer, as well as raise funds for Susan G. Komen.
In 1999 they developed they Awareness Bra Program where they include a special pink ribbon flag symbol on every bra in the collection as a reminder to women to take care of themselves. Plus, they include an informative hangtag with instructions on how to administer breast self-examinations. Each of the four bra styles in the Awareness collection includes these extras, and is as beautiful and as comfortable as any woman could want. Now there are four great reasons to buy an Awareness Bra.
While the Awareness bras are a great reminder to take care of yourself, Wacoal went a step further with their Fi(gh)t for the Cure® program. In 2001 they launched this nationwide event to educate women on the joys and virtues of a well-fitting bra, while raising funds for breast cancer research. For every woman professionally fitted by a Wacoal specialist during a Fit for the Cure® event, Wacoal will make a donation to Komen –even if no purchase is made. Since its inception, this program has generated almost three million dollars in donations to breast cancer research.
As September wanes and October sails into meet us, start ‘thinking pink’ and get involved with the fight against breast cancer. May this month be a reminder to take care of yourself and others. Schedule that mammogram you’ve been putting off. Participate in a Fit for the Cure® event. Gather some girlfriends, put on your running (or walking) shoes and sign up for a local race/walk. There are lots of ways to get involved. Contact your local breast cancer organization and see how you can make a difference. And remember, while October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer is a year round issue so also look for ways to continue participating throughout the year. Together we can – and will – make a difference!
