Bottom Line: Johhny Depp gives it his all in this love letter to the work of the late author, Hunter S. Thompson. Unfortunately, Depp’s all just ain’t enough as THE RUM DIARY is a two-hour, liquor-infused exercise in trying really hard to give a damn. It’s a well made, colorful and occasionally spirited film but the praise ends there as the rest is unfocused, meandering and serves very little purpose. Once I left the theater, the movie slipped my mind. I feel pretty dirty just saying/typing it but this movie made me long for fifth round of PIRATES.
