When Maureen Nickel of Syosset realized she needed assistance with her mom who had just had a stroke a few years back, she was disappointed in the home care agencies she called.
“No one took the time to ask me about my mom or what my concerns and fears were. They would just immediately tell me how much it cost, as if that was the only issue. And a couple of them didn’t even call me back.”
That frustration eventually led Maureen and her husband, Don, to leave the corporate world and open their own BrightStar Care franchise. The Nickel’s youngest son had recently left for college, and the couple was searching for an opportunity to work together. After intensive research into the home care business, they selected BrightStar Care as the most compassionate, professional, and well run in terms of complete franchise education and support.
“But it wasn’t just a matter of us selecting them – they vetted us over several months too before we were approved!”
Not only that, but the Nickels then began an intensive training period in corporate headquarters outside Chicago. “The training covered everything, and I mean everything – why hiring experienced CNA’s (certified nursing assistants) and HHA’s (home health aides) makes a big difference in the quality of service you are providing to families; Alzheimers, dementia, stroke, etc.; how to train our phone people to understand the needs of the callers; state Medicaid laws and Social Security laws; payroll systems, and more.” Maureen describes the training as all very worthwhile. “Just recently, we also completed another four days of training to become Certified Senior Advisors.
The new Syosset office opened in August. The Nickels have several clients already and anticipate more that come in from hospitals, assisted living facilities, rehab centers and local word-of-mouth referrals.
Each time someone inquires, an in-home RN assessment is done to get a better picture of the client’s situation. A plan of care is written up and on-site follow-up assessments take place every two-three weeks. “A home care situation can sometimes change dramatically in a matter of days.” Some clients require just a few hours a week; others may need an overnight or live-in; still others just need ‘wake up and tuck in’ service.”
When someone picks up the phone to make the first call about home care for their loved one, whether it’s an elderly person or a special needs child or someone recovering from major surgery, “it’s an emotional purchase. You want to speak to someone who cares and knows what they’re talking about.”
Now in 37 states and recently featured on Undercover Boss, BrightStar Care has over 300 independently owned and operated franchises.
