21. South Florida 2-0
Previous Rank: NR; Last Game: W 37-7 Ball State; Next Game: vs Florida A&M
B.J. Daniels threw for 359 yards and a score and South Florida followed up a big win against Notre Dame with an easy 37-7 pasting of the Cardinals. The defense held Ball State to 12 1st downs and forced three fumbles including one that Mark Joyce returned for a touchdown on the opening kickoff. The Bulls have an easy schedule coming up before a Thursday night showdown at Pittsburgh on a short week September 29th. If they win that one it could be smooth sailing all the way until the final game in Tampa against West Virginia.
22. Baylor 1-0
Previous Rank: NR; Last Game: W 50-48 TCU; Next Game: Stephen F. Austin
The Bears had a week off following their huge season-opening win over TCU and will have another week off of sorts when they welcome the FCS Lumberjacks to Waco. Baylor had to hold on for dear life as TCU scored 25 unanswered points in the 4th quarter before Aaron Jones hit a 37-yard field goal to give the Bears the upset. Robert Griffin III is an under-the-radar Heisman candidate as he passed for 359 yards and five touchdowns in the opener and expects to put up big numbers in this one as well.
23. TCU 1-1
Previous Rank: 23; Last Game: W 35-19 Air Force; Next Game: vs Louisiana-Monroe
The Horned Frogs bounced back nicely from their shocking opening-season loss by jumping out to a 21-0 lead and never looking back against Air Force. The Falcons score with :04 seconds remaining made the final score look respectable but TCU was in control throughout. The game was a statistical draw but Matthew Tucker had two rushing touchdowns and Casey Pachall was very efficient going 20-25 for 206 yards and two touchdowns on his way to Mountain West Player of the Week honors.
24. Texas 2-0
Previous Rank: 25; Last Game: W 17-16 BYU; Next Game: @ UCLA
The Longhorns struggled again offensively behind starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert but two Cody Johnson rushing touchdowns in the 2nd half were enough to hold off BYU. Gilbert was benched in favor of Case McCoy and David Ash and the two were effective enough to give the Longhorns their 2nd win of the season. The pair figures to continue in their quarterback rotation as Texas heads to Los Angeles to play the Bruins this week. Texas must find a running game to take the pressure off their young quarterbacks.
25. Mississippi State 1-1
Previous Rank: 16; Last Game: L 41-34 Auburn; Next Game: vs LSU
The Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker to Auburn when quarterback Chris Relf was stopped just short of the goal line on the final play of the game. Vick Ballard and Relf combined to rush for 246 yards leading Mississippi State to 531 yards of total offense. The teams traded 1st half interceptions that were both returned for touchdowns but Mississippi State’s comeback from 14 points down in the 4th quarter fell just a few inches short. It only gets harder as they host LSU this week.
Fell out of the poll: Missouri (21), Penn State (24)
