Today is Buddha’s return from heaven day. In celebration of this, Wisdom Kadampa Meditation Center is putting on a special puja called Offering to the Spiritual Guide. In the their center at 1200 S Street, Kelsang Mikyopa an ordained Monk, worked on setting up for the puja. As the sangha slowly trickle into the cool room they bring fruit, crackers, cookies, and water to offer to their Spiritual Guide Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. By doing this puja they receive blessings from their Spiritual Guide, that help them on the path to liberation.
On this day people accumulate a vast amount of positive potential in their minds by doing positive actions. As they set up they talk about what this day means.
“It is about when Buddha Shakyamuni returned from the Thirty-three Heavens where he had been helping his mother who had been reborn. His disciples begged him to come back to the human realm to help them. Hearing their request he came back and continued to guide them along the path. So we celebrate him!” said Mikyopa.
Another practitioner said, “Traditionally it is the end of the summer retreat. Buddha asked his followers to go on a three-month retreat in the summer to protect animals and insects. The nature of Buddhadharma is compassion for all living beings. Buddhist’s have compassion for animals that are suffering far worse than most humans. So they refrain from killing them by staying inside as much as possible during these months. Buddhist disciples remember Buddha’s kindness in helping all living beings be free from suffering through his teachings on love and compassion.”
Geshe Kelsang Gyatso says, “What is Buddha’s wish? His main wish is that his teachings will flourish throughout the world so that all living beings find release from suffering.”
Also at Wisdom Kadampa Meditation Center is a Tuesday night meditation class. No experience necessary. Everyone is welcome!
