New business owner Martha Manske started Martita’sTM Mixers in 2010 to allow calorie-conscious consumers to indulge in margaritas and similar tropical drinks without the guilt. Her mixes are naturally-sweetened, naturally-colored, and gluten-free. The classic Guiltless Margarita Mix brings a traditional margarita’s 250 calories down to about 80, and the strawberry mix lowers the count to about 100.
How do you distinguish your company in the marketplace?
Our high quality mixes do not contain some of the unnecessary ingredients that many of the other margaritas mixes have, making them a better alternative.
What makes this the right business for you?
I have always LOVED margaritas but for years I thought that we should be able to enjoy them without all the guilt since they are both high in sugar and high in calories.
What are some of the most effective marketing tools you use?
- Facebook—the cost is right.
- Farmers markets—great for getting the word out, educating my customers, and selling my product.
- Fundraisers—I can meet people and have them try my product. It’s at no cost to the organization putting on the event, so it’s a win-win.
Can you describe something particularly creative or innovative you’ve done to market your company?
I’ve given my bottles an identity: They are women who are like most of us, fighting the battle of the bulge but still wanting to enjoy some of the pleasures of life.
Thinking about brand new, cutting-edge, or social media marketing ideas, what are some of your favorite business tips?
Communicate with your customers and make them part of your business. Do not ignore their needs.
Thinking about classic, traditional, old-school marketing ideas, what are some of your favorite business tips?
Good customer service should never be ignored! Treat your customers right. Poor customer service really makes me mad.
Are there any business or marketing books, publications, websites, or blogs that you turn to again and again for advice or inspiration?
I find that quotes inspire me the most. I post them around me to keep me motivated and help me get past the bumps in the road. My favorite is: “To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, be nothingn” by Elbert Hubbard. No matter what you do, you are going to be criticized by people so you can’t let that stop you. The rest of how to run a business you can figure out with help from mentors, but you have to stay motivated.
What is a recent business or marketing book, article, or website you’ve read and what is something you learned from it?
A friend of mine told me recently to underline or circle specific things you want to get across in any print advertising/brochures—that it will help those things stand out.
Is there any other marketing advice you can offer?
Get out there as much as you can! You have to constantly sell yourself, it’s never ending.
