Drummer extraordinaire and co-worker Tony has introduced me to stories about his female Beagle, “Norm.” Norm has a very interesting characteristic – especially for a Beagle!
When the Tony and his wife lost their Weiner dog to old age, the couple truly wanted a repeat because they truly loved their dog very much. Also, the couple loved the Norm McDonald Show and their dreams for a repeat were linked to this program that they continually enjoyed together. Tony and his wife share a love-filled life of 15 years of shared promises and dreams come true; a permanent honeymoon – so their fanaticism about getting another wiener dog was simply a small token of that shared simple time together. Most people only dream of these simpler things in life!
So once they began their “hunt” for the perfect new addition to their little family, they began contacting and visiting VCA Shelters. There was absolutely NO WIENER DOGS ANYWHERE! However, they were contacted by the Chicago Heights Shelter and told that this shelter had ‘a cute little Beagle.’
The couple threw caution to the wind and decided that a visit was indeed in order. By the time they were ready to leave the shelter, Tony was completely covered in fur!
It seems that the visit produced some results that the couple was not expecting: Love at first sight! And even though their new dog was NOT a wiener dog, it still seemed appropriate to go ahead and name their new Beagle “Norm” after their favorite program.
So Norm won the couples hearts and has continued to be extraordinary! If you are familiar with Beagles, as I am (owned them from childhood until after college), you would know that this breed of dogs are barkers. They bark to alert and bark after a hunting kill and bark simply to bark. But not Norm!
Norm has only barked four times in her entire 11.5 years of life (although, according to Tony, she will bay when the couple comes and goes). Twice she barked when playing chase-games with her couple. Once she barked when absolutely no one she loved was paying attention to her because Tony and his beloved had both had interesting days and were wound up and discussing the day’s events and had not quite acknowledged Norm yet.
The final bark was a peculiar one in that the couple is also very dedicated viewers of THE DOG WHISPERER, and, so is Norm! One night while viewing the program, Norm noticed the TV screen and let loose with a single “BARK” in answer to the program.
Because “Norm” has been a particular light in this couple’s love-filled life, they would certainly choose to select another Beagle again. Their only hope is that the next Beagle would be as fantastic as “Norm” has proven to be!
