Busch Gardens announced its new 2012 show today, complete with a big celebration that included amazingly decorated cakes, performers showing off some of the new costumes, and adorable sled dogs that will be co-stars of the show. For the first time ever, Busch invited members of the public to learn the details along with the media, then cut and served the cakes to attendees, who also got to mingle with some of the performers. The show, Iceploration, brings an ice show back to Busch Gardens after a long absence. It is set to debut on February 2. This all-new spectacle is the creation of skilled collaborators like Tony Award winning costume designer Gregg Barnes, who won Best Costume Design in 2007 for his work on The Drowsy Chaperone. Busch Gardens President Jim Dean said that guests have been asking for another ice show, and this new theme fits perfectly into the park’s animal focus.
Iceploration marks the first time that animals will co-star with humans in an ice show. There are some wild creatures, like a Siberian lynx, but perhaps the most popular and personable stars will be the sled dog team. Two of them were on had to greet the media and other guests who attended the announcement, and they were obviously loving the attention. They already know how to pull a sled, but their trainers will slowly get them used to doing it on stage, with special effects and a big audience.
There will be plenty of human “animals” in costume, and well as big Broadway-style puppets. You’ll see cheetahs, frogs, gazelles, meerkats, eels, lionfish, turtles, sea urchins and more. They all tie into the story of a teen who things the digital age has him tied into the world. His grandfather teaches him that it takes more than a computer to connect you to the beauty of nature as they visit the Serengeti, Great Barrier Reef, The Amazon Rainforest, and the Arctic. Besides the performers, Busch is tying in special effects like lighting that recreates the Aurora Borealis. Their amazing journey is compacted into a 30-minute show.
Busch’s Christmas ice show will move into the Moroccan Palace theater this year, from November 21 to New Years Day. Then there’s a month gap, and Iceploration kicks off on February 2.
