A quick look at this weekend’s Northern 4A football matchups . . .
CARSON (2-1, 2-0) at BISHOP MANOGUE (3-1, 3-1): Manogue looked out of synch last week in a 23-14 loss at Reno. They obviously missed running back Kenny Rogers, who may also miss this weekend’s game. Carson hasn’t given up a point in almost a month (Sept. 3). The Senators, though, haven’t seen a quarterback like Manogue’s T.J. Menning over the last month. Still, we’re going with the defense here. The pick: Carson 33, Manogue 21.
McQUEEN (2-2, 2-1) at DOUGLAS (1-3, 1-2): Douglas got its first victory last week, beating North Valleys. And the Tigers played Reed (a 47-30 loss) a lot closer than McQueen (a 40-6 loss) last week. Plus, the game is at Douglas. This is one of those season-turning games. The loser will have its confidence shaken. The winner comes out feeling pretty good about itself. The pick: Douglas 35, McQueen 31.
HUG (0-5, 0-4) at GALENA (0-4, 0-3): It hasn’t been a pleasant month for Hug. The Hawks have been outscored 119-0 over the last two weeks. Odds are, the Hawks will score against Galena. Maybe. But the Grizzlies have had two weeks to prepare for this one and, well, victories might be in short supply down on Mt. Rose Highway starting next week. The pick: Galena 42, Hug 7.
RENO (3-1, 3-0) at SPANISH SPRINGS (3-2, 3-1): This is another pivotal game. Is Reno for real? The Huskies beat Manogue last week but the Miners were very cordial guests. Spanish Springs was rolling until they were upset by Damonte Ranch last week. This is one of those games where the winner can seprate itself from the pack a little bit. Spanish Springs has a tough road ahead of them the rest of the way. They probably need to get this one a bit more than Reno does. And they should be a bit hungrier, especially at home and coming off a tough loss. The pick: Spanish Springs 32, Reno 24.
NORTH VALLEYS (1-4, 1-4) at REED (3-1, 3-0): Reed whipped McQueen last week on the road and, well, they shouldn’t be tested until they host Manogue in the middle of October. North Valleys has allowed an average of 45 points a game, and that includes 38 to Hug. Reed can make this score anything they want it to be. But they probably won’t have much emotion this week. The pick: Reed 42, North Valleys 14.
