If you’ve been involved in or even aware of cat rescue efforts in the Sarasota area over the years then you’re probably familiar with Cat Depot. The rescue started humbly with a bunch of dedicated volunteers and a nothing-ish storefront (see photo) thrown together in response to an emergency situation with a shelter closing and a new facility needing to be found and put into operation literally overnight.
In the years since, Cat Depot has continued to thrive, even moving into impressive new digs with their own retail shop and education facilities. Of course it takes .. as George Harrison once sang “… plenty of money, to do it right…” and that means fundraisers. So here’s their press release telling of the latest effort and how you can help save the lives of these sweet felines just by donating a little of your precious time on one special day:
100 volunteers are needed for Cat’s Depot’s big Kids, Cats and Cupcakes Carnival on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed in various areas including carnival barkers, parking lot attendants, ticket sales, food prep, and entertainment stage assistants. Shifts are available and groups are welcome. (Children under 18 must be with a parent/guardian at all times.)
Families and children from ages 3 to 13 are welcome to join us in a fun day of carnival games and entertainment by children! There will be free parking and shuttles in the Orioles parking lot on Stringfield Avenue with additional parking for handicap at Hideaway Storage on 17th Street.
Youth-oriented carnival game prizes are needed (items must be new) such as school supplies, silly bands/wrist bands, sidewalk chalk, stickers, toys, beach items, puzzles and books. Raffle items or carnival game prizes can be dropped off at Cat Depot during our open hours, weekdays 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and weekends 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
