Halloween has grown from a single night of candy-crazed door-to-door shenanigans into a weekend-long celebration of costumed debauchery and good times with good music. This year Lawrence is overflowing with great shows every day leading up to the big night next Monday. There’s plenty to do across town so here’s a short list of some of the best shows to be found this week.
Tonight, L.A. based Orgone is playing their afro-beat funk with Scratch Track at the Bottleneck. The word “Orgone” means “A universal life force, a cosmic unit of energy, the creative force of nature.” So if the dictionary cannot persuade you of this band’s power and feel, just look forward to a lot of brass and percussion to dance to.
Tomorrow night local garage rockers L5 will play with Philadelphia-based Lantern, and Living Ghost. L5 has become a rising star downtown as one of the best sources of original rock that holds the fuzzy familiarity of old folk, while still feeling fresh and inspired. Check out the Replay Lounge at 10 p.m.
Friday, Liberty Hall’s space will be put to the ultimate test as March Fourth Marching Band and Quixotic play/perform at 7 p.m. This concert is going to be out of this world. Anyone who has seen either of these bands can tell you that the combination of circus-grade acrobatics and professional dancing combined with powerful, impressive music is a feast for the eyes and the ears. March Fourth Marching Band features a collection of musicians bearing actual marching band instruments, as well as dancers and stilt-walkers performing amazing feats. Quixotic is like a Cirque du Soleil variety act, with gorgeous ladies spinning and swinging from metal contraptions, fire-dancers and costumed dance-artists. Pipeline Productions is giving away a pair of tickets to the show on their facebook page. The show will feature Vibe Tribe and a costume contest with a pair of Wakarusa Music Festival Tickets as the grand prize. The show costs $16 for general admission or $21 for reserved balcony seats. And then there is the after party.
Following the amazing show at Liberty Hall, a massive crowd of amped music lovers will rage down the street to the Bottleneck to see BMT and Mouth get funky all night long. The local Funk Gods of Mouth are a reliable party for all, so don’t miss the fun!
Saturday, the best surf-rock, horror-punk Lawrence original band The Spook Lights will play the Replay Lounge with The Voodoo Organist! The Spook Lights are the perfect Halloween band, with their scary B-horror-movie influence and energetic live shows.
Monday night everything gets a little extra wild when EOTO plays two sets at Liberty Hall after R/D and NMEZEE open up for the biggest Halloween party in town. The electronica that is due to hit Liberty Hall that night will be so powerful and dance-able that people may not be able to stop partying until late Tuesday afternoon. Be prepared.
