According to Buddhist philosophy the cause of human suffering is not the pain we face because of change or loss, but it is our aversion and dislike of change that directly creates our suffering. We either want the things we enjoy or like to continue, or the things that are painful or which we don’t like to end—this liking and disliking is the root cause of human suffering. The things we believe are painful do not inherently possess pain. Rather suffering is created by our reaction to our experiences. Based on this premise, for the countless number of human beings who fear or dislike change, the changes that are predicted to happen in 2012 are bound to be traumatic. We all know change is definite. Indeed, inescapable. So what is the recourse for those who struggle against its inevitability? Is there recourse?
The Changes in 2012
Before we delve into how to prepare for the changes that are supposed to occur in 2012, let’s look at what is supposed to be happening next year. The winter solistice on 21 December 2012, will bring about a galactic alignment that happens once every 26000 years — our sun will line up perfectly with the center of our Milky Way galaxy; the sun will be at the at equator of our galaxy.
This alignment has many interpretations in different cultures: the Bible prophesies the ‘end of days’ in the year 2012. The Mayan calendar ends on the winter solistice on 21 December 2012. The Hindu Yuga system claims the Iron Age or Kali Yuga will end, and a new Satyuga or Golden Age (Age of Aquarius) will begin. The Native American Hopi say the Fourth World will end and the Fifth World will begin. Some claim the magnetic poles will completely reverse in this year. Even though there are many arguments about what is supposed to happen, they all agree change is imminent. Human beings on planet earth are on the brink of astronomical change.
What’s Already Happening?
Whether we consciously acknowledge it or not, we live in a world that is in constant flux. Change isn’t isolated to this one specific date in time. Change is already happening. These days our attention is drawn to the greed, destruction, pollution and injustice that are occurring around the world. But this isn’t the only thing going on now. We don’t hear or see much of the positive and enlightened works and actions taking place around the world. Everywhere more and more people are becoming awakened to an inner yearning to find and live their life purpose, and to contribute to the betterment of our planet, world and society. This is no accident or coincidence. Change is occurring and we have the power to affect the outcome.

In part 2 of this article, we’ll explore how to prepare for change and to discover our true nature and purpose.
