The annual Small Business Expo is expected to draw hundreds of new and established businesses eager to learn ways to stay afloat and start a new business during tough, economic times.
The Expo will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 at the UIC Forum, 725 W. Roosevelt Road in Chicago.
And the goal said Stephanie Neely, treasurer for the city of Chicago, is to provide business owners and would be entrepreneurs with knowledge and resources, such as outreach programs, that will help promote financial literacy while also developing their small businesses.
The Treasurer’s office sponsors the event each year.
One new business owner who plans to attend is Maizelle Hutson, founder of Maizelle’s Delights, a Chicago-based pound cake business on Chicago’s South Side.
“I have learned so much since starting my business and I know I have so much more to learn before I can consider myself a success story,” she said. “Expos like these are important to small businesses especially black-owned businesses that often struggle with financing because in any business you have to be knowledgeable about the ABC’s of business.”
Besides sponsoring the Expo each year the Treasurer’s Office is also responsible for other important business matters on behalf of the city.
The primary duties for Neely and her staff is to be the chief investment officer of a portfolio of approximately $6 billion. This is done by protecting principal, maintaining liquidity and earning the highest possible investment return for the city. Additionally, the office is charged with promoting economic development, which creates jobs and stimulates the local economy.
That is what Hutson said she hopes to do with her business.
“I want to grow my business so I can create jobs and help stabilize my neighborhood’s commerce,” she explained. “I will also be participating in the Christian Business Expo Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Matteson Holiday Inn. Expos are a great resource for small businesses especially when you have very little capital to invest upfront.”
