Fall can be a sad time in Kansas City. Warm summer days are gone, the pool is closed, and it feels like the abundance of concerts and music festivals have been packed up and stored away until next year. Well, that’s not quite true.
Kansas City is currently just three weeks away from KQRC’s annual Halloween extravaganza, Freakers Ball. This year’s Ball will be on Friday, October 21, at the Independence Events Center, and will feature Rev Theory, Hatebreed, Anthrax, and Five Finger Death Punch. The fifth band will be the still-undecided winner of Clubwars.
Part of the fun of Freakers Ball, of course, is the costume contest. There’s always an enthusiastic response to any opportunity to dress up, and the $1000 grand prize just adds extra incentive. Contestants will have a two hour window to check in at the south entrance of the Events Center. Ten finalists will be selected during the show to go on stage, and the crowd will pick the top three. If you’re curious about what sort of competition to expect for that prize, check out the video of 2010’s contest.
The other part of Freakers Ball that keeps it from being just another concert is Clubwars. If you’re not familiar with Clubwars, well, think of a local American Idol without all the annoying pop princesses. To eligible, bands must be based in Kansas or Missouri. They compete head to head in order to advance to the final rounds. There are various tournaments throughout the yet, but every year sees a Battle for Freakers Ball. Finalists receive cash prizes, and the grand prize winner also scores time at Chapman Recording and an opening spot at Freakers Ball.
This year’s battle isn’t over. September 30th will see another round beginning at 8 p.m. at Aftershock in Merriam, Kansas. The all-ages show will see Cronus, Beneath the Surface, Sidewise and Levein fighting for the votes of fans and judges to stay in the game. The championship round will be on Sunday, October 16th at Harrah’s VooDoo Lounge.
Bands that have made the championship round so far: Knot Afrayed, Kadanyne, The F.C.C., Black Ribbon Sky, Withird 1, and Seventh Day.
