Courage Theatre Company, Los Angeles’ only pay-what-you-want theater, presents the West Coast premiere of Double Falsehood by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher as adapted by Lewis Theobald opening Saturday, October 1, 2011. Directed by Kirsten Kuiken the show stars Valorie Curry, Amin El Gamal, Nicole Farmer, Dennis Gersten, Jeremy Lelliott, Sammi Smith, Peter Weidman, Alexander Wells and Michael Yurchak.
“The Arden Shakespeare editors’ inclusion of Double Falsehood in the Shakespeare collection has prompted as much controversy as it has settled. Lewis Theobald was ridiculed for his claim to have found three manuscripts of Shakespeare and Fletcher’s lost Cardenio play in 1727. Nearly three centuries later, the debate continues to be a heated one.”
Knowledge exists “that Shakespeare and Fletcher wrote such a play, but some still claim that this text is a forgery, authored by Theobald himself. Many who continue to back this argument point to the blatant similarities between Double Falsehood and many of Shakespeare’s other works. Those who doubt that Shakespeare would reference himself to this extent ignore the fact that he did the same in his other two collaborations with Fletcher.
“In fact, nobody in Theobald’s time was even aware that Shakespeare had collaborated at all with Fletcher, who was his successor as the house playwright for the King’s Men. There are countless other evidences that all three men had a hand in the play that survives today, as is well detailed in the Arden edition. Perhaps the most telling, though, are the words that Shakespeare didn’t write. They cast strong doubt on the notion that Theobald was capable of authoring the rest of this piece on his own, for alongside them are the complex and beautifully crafted passages that bear the unmatched brilliance of William Shakespeare.”
