The involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, in the death of pop star Michael Jackson, started on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. The case, being tried in Los Angeles, California, isi being covered by national and international media, as Michael Jackson was an international star and his death brought interest from around the world. The opening day of the trial explored Jackson’s final days and that coverage is bound to continue. Jackson died of an overdose of propofol, lorazepam and other drugs on June 26, 2011.

Murray’s “acts and omissions” led to the singer’s “premature death at age 50,” said deputy district attorney David Walgren during opening statements.
At question, according to the defense, is Dr. Conrad Murrays role in administering the propofol, which is an anesthetic used intravenously for surgery. The defense team in claiming that Michael Jackson took the fatal dose himself, when Conrad Murray stepped out of the room. Ed Chernoff, Murray’s lawyer, said that the singer created a “perfect storm in his body that killed him instantly.”
In the opening day of the trial, a tape was played of Michael Jackson talking in a slurred voice. The tape was recorded by the doctor on May 10, 2011, indicating his level of intoxication.
Kenny Ortega, a choreographer and friend of Jackson’s, was the first witness for the prosecution. Ortega testified that had been shocked by Jackson’s appearance a week before his death. Ortega testified that Jackson was thin, chilled and appeared to be lost and disoriented. Ortega said that he gave Jackson food and wrapped him in a blanket.

Ortega also helmed the film ‘This is It,’ which showed Michael Jackson rehearsing for his final concert tour. Jackson died just days before the tour was set to commence. The testimony must have been disturbing for the members of Jackson family in the courtroom. They were described as having tears in their eyes.
