Covering theology is an erroneous doctrine that claims all Christians must be under the authority (covering) of a church leader to be protected from the warfare of the devil. It also claims this same covering is necessary to receive God’s blessings. However, there is no Scripture foundation for this doctrine. Covering theology is a leftover from the debunked Shepherding Movement that appeared about 40 years ago.
Covering theology teaches that the kingdom of God operates like the Roman Empire with a clearly defined hierarchical order… Jesus makes it very clear in Mat 20:25-26 that the church should not operate like the Roman Empire.
Covering theology is coercive and inevitably leads to spiritual abuse. It compels people to submit through the threat of spiritual disaster. It is manipulative because the threat is not real. There is no scripture that indicates people put themselves at peril if they aren’t completely submitted to authority. – Leighton Tebay, BA in Biblical Studies and Pastoral Ministry
Spiritual abuse is as real as physical, sexual, emotional and verbal abuse. Covering theology is a doctrine that enslaves. Yeshua set mankind free from every bondage and gave them power over the devil (John 8:36; 2 Timothy 1:7).
“Spiritual abuse can occur when a leader uses his or her spiritual position to control or dominate another person. It often involves overriding the feelings and opinions of another, without regard to what will result in the other person’s state of living, emotions or spiritual well-being – The Subtle Power Of Spiritual Abuse by Johnson, David, and Jeff VanVonderen
Yeshua Messiah is our only Protector. It is through faith and obedience to Him that we reap the blessings promised in Scripture. In the Book of Ephesians we are instructed to personally put on the full armor of God for protection:
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. – Ephesians 6:11-13 (KJV)

There is strength, edification, and blessings when the Body of Christ is unified, but the Body’s empowerment, individually and collectively, does not come from themselves. It flows to them from the Creator (Acts 2:2-3).
Covered by the Blood of Christ
The born-again disciples of Yeshua are covered by His blood. What covering could be more powerful than His precious Blood? None. There is no covering a Believer needs other then that covering which comes form the Messiah.
The sacrifice of His life restored mankind to the intimate relationship with the Father that they enjoyed in the Garden of Eden. Under the covering of Yeshua’s Blood disciples have access to the same power which He possessed. They have the power to do all which He did, and even greater things (John 14:12).
