Renovated in 2007 by current owner Tamie Adaya, Hotel Shangri-La is Art-Deco at its most exquisite; we were so thrilled we came for a visit! The hotel has been overlooking the Pacific Ocean since 1939; the view from the Dining Room is simply divine! Hotel Shangri-La is a Santa Monica landmark walking distance from the pier and Palisades Park.

Bartender Jessica Steissman made us a great sampling of cocktails including the Berry Apropos (Belvedere vodka, champagne and dry ice, we’ve never seen a drink that looks this nice!), Cantaloupe Au Poivre (Cantaloupe Grey Goose vodka, and Perrier Jouet with black pepper), Blackberry Zingiber (Herradura Anejo Tequila, fresh ginger, Domain de Canton, fresh blackberries created by Bar Manager Cole Apodaca), and an Arugula Gimlet (Gin, arugula, raspberries).
Their wine list is quite extensive and Happy Hour prices are not expensive. Jessica gave us generous tastes of the Hess Cabernet Mt. Veeder Napa Valley 2007 (Stacey’s fav), Roth Estate Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2009, Sutcliff Vineyards Mc Elmo Chardonnay, Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough, New Zealand 2010 (Sara’s fav).
Director of PR & Marketing Miles Lozano and Supervisor Michael Hegedus treated us to their new fall Happy Hour menu which included Sweet Potato Fries Habanero Ketchup and Basil Aioli; Crispy Rice “Tots” Two Ways: Jamaican Jerk Sauce, Cilantro Korean BBQ, nori spice; Hoisin Sliders with Braised Pork and Jicima Slaw; Lamb Sliders With Date Spread, Harissa Spiced Arugula; and Grilled Flat Bread with Buratta and tomatoes. This feast was full of creative selections; we could not make a favorite election.
Shangri-la is a haven offering real respite; the staff here is warm, inviting and super polite! They gave us impeccable service and went the extra mile, such attention to detail and all with a smile! Posh and glamorous Shangri-La lives up to its name; we just voted it into the Happy Hour Hall of Fame!
